Tamara Ivanovna Tichonowa ( Russian Тамара Ивановна Тихонова , scientific transliteration Tamara Ivanovna Tichonova ; born June 13, 1964 in Kowaljowo, Udmurt ASSR ) is a former Russian cross-country skier who competed for the Soviet Union .
Career
Tichonowa ran her first World Cup race in Murmansk in March 1984 and took 20th place over 10 km. At the Junior World Championships in Trondheim in 1984 , she won the bronze medal over 5 km and the silver medal with the relay. The following year she won the gold medal with the relay at the Nordic World Ski Championships 1985 in Seefeld in Tirol . At the Winter Universiade 1987 in Štrbské Pleso , she won gold over 5 km. At the beginning of the 1987/88 season she won her first World Cup victory in Bohinj over 10 km freestyle. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary , she was one of the most successful participants. She won the gold medal over 20 kilometers and with the relay. It also took second place over 5 kilometers and fifth over 10 km. These competitions were also counted as World Cup races. She finished the season in fourth place in the overall World Cup. In the following season she came in second place three times in the World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989 , she won bronze in the 10 km freestyle and silver in the relay. In the overall World Cup, she took third place. At the beginning of the 1990/91 season, she came third at the World Cup in Tauplitzalm . In the further course of the season a second place followed in the 15 km freestyle at the World Cup in Falun . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991 in Val di Fiemme , she won bronze over 10 km freestyle and gold in the relay. Her last World Cup race she ran in December 1991 in Thunder Bay , which she finished in 12th place over 5 km freestyle.
Tikhonova won the Soviet championships in 1985 and 1989 with the relay.
