Vibeke Westbye Skofterud (born April 20, 1980 in Askim ; † July 29, 2018 in St. Helena , Hove , Arendal ) was a Norwegian cross-country skier . She celebrated her greatest successes with the Norwegian cross-country relay, with which she won the gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and at the 2005 and 2011 World Championships .

Career

Vibeke Skofterud competed internationally for the first time at the 1999 Junior World Championships in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer . Over the 15 km in free style, she finished 37th. After she won a podium twice over the 5 km in Campra in December, she started at the Junior World Championships 2000 in Štrbské Pleso . There she ran over 5 km in eighth place. Even over the 15 km in classic style, she finished ninth in the top 10. In the relay competition, she won the bronze medal with the Norwegian team. On March 8, 2000, Skofterud made her debut in the cross-country skiing world cup . In Oslo she reached 25th place in the sprint and won her first World Cup points straight away.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2001 in Lahti , Skofterud was part of the Norwegian team. In the pursuit, she finished in 36th place. In the sprint she came in 16th place. Two weeks after the World Championship, she was in the top 10 in a World Cup race for the first time at the sprint in Oslo. At the Norwegian Championships 2001 in Steinkjer , she won the bronze medal over the 30 km behind Bente Skari and Elin Nilsen . Shortly after the start of the 2001/02 season , she reached a World Cup podium for the first time in Cogne as third. A day later she was second in the sprint. A week later, Skofterud was part of the World Cup relay for the first time. Together with Tina Bay , Bente Skari and Hilde Gjermundshaug Pedersen , she celebrated her first World Cup victory in Davos . At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City that followed in February , she remained after placements in midfield in the individual disciplines without a relay nomination. Back in the World Cup, she reached the relay in Falun as second and again a place in the top three. At the last World Cup of the season in Lillehammer , she was second in the individual over the 58 km.

In the 2002/03 season Skofterud started with a fifth place in the sprint of Düsseldorf . In November she won the relay in Kiruna . She also won the relay race in Davos with her teammates. After some rather poor results, Skofterud traveled to the World Championships 2003 in Val di Fiemme in February . After finishing 22nd in the individual over 10 km in classic style, she reached 13th place in the skiathlon. With the relay she won the silver medal. In the overall World Cup ranking, Skofterud ended up in 21st place after rather poor results after the World Cup.

The 2003/04 season went better . After winning the relay in Beitostølen , she was second over the 10 km from Kuusamo again on a podium in an individual World Cup. In Davos, she and her teammates defended the relay victory from the previous year. Also in Otepää in January, the relay came first. In Umeå , the team achieved their third win of the season and won all relay races of the season.

In the following season, the team started again with a relay win in Gällivare . In the individual races, Skofterud remained without a win or another podium despite good top 10 placements. In Lago di Tesero, she and the team missed victory for the first time in over a year and crossed the finish line in third place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2005 she was also unable to convince in the individual disciplines, but secured the world championship title with the team in the relay race.

The season in Beitostølen also started the following winter with a clear victory. In February 2006 Skofterud started for the first time in the Cross-Country Scandinavian Cup , where she immediately won the two 7.5 km in Nes .

At the beginning of winter 2006/07 , Skofterud just missed the podium in Gällivare in fifth. A day later, she won the relay race with her teammates again. In Kuusamo she ran again in 5th place over the 10 km in the individual race. In December and January she competed in the Tour de Ski for the first time and finished it in ninth place in the overall standings. As a member of the Norwegian squad, she traveled to the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo . After finishing 33rd in the sprint, she was 13th in the pursuit. After a 21st place in the following individual over the 10 km, she won the bronze medal over 4 × 7.5 km with the relay.

In the 2007/08 season Skofterud started with one kilometer in second on 10 in Beitostølen. A day later she won the race in the same place with the relay. In Davos, too, she barely missed her first individual World Cup victory. As in Beitostølen, she achieved victory with the relay. The following Tour de Ski 2007/08 she broke off prematurely after she had not started in Val di Fiemme. At the following Norwegian Championships in 2008 at Granåsen , she won silver over 10 km and bronze in the pursuit.

In August 2009 Skofterud started the Rollerski World Cup for the first time and finished seventh in Kristiansund . The Tour de Ski 2009/10 ended for her again in Val di Fiemme after she was disqualified there. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , she won the gold medal in the relay race together with Marit Bjørgen , Kristin Størmer Steira and Therese Johaug . Further top placements, including in the relay, did not materialize until the end of the season.

In August 2010 she won her first race in the Rollerski World Cup. In November she and her teammates won the first relay World Cup of the season in Gällivare. The following Nordic Opening in Kuusamo ended Skofterud in sixth.

In January 2011 Skofterud won her second race in the Scandinavian Cup in Torsby . In Oslo she took part in the 2011 World Championships in March and won the gold medal for the second time with her team mates.

In the following winter 2011/12 she started with a third place in Sjusjøen . A day later she celebrated her 15th relay World Cup victory with the team. At the Nordic Opening a few days later she also proved her strength with three podium places and third place overall. In March 2012 Skofterud won the Wasalauf . She had previously finished the overall World Cup in 11th place. She was subsequently unable to build on this success and contested her last international race during the Tour de Ski 2013/14 . For her sudden end to her career, she later gave health reasons.

From November 2015 she worked as a commentator at Eurosport. She also gave ski courses and was active as a trainer.

Private

In 2005 Skofterud turned down an offer for erotic photos for the Norwegian edition of the FHM at pressure from the National Ski Association. Her private laptop with intimate photos had previously been stolen in 2004, some of which appeared in Internet forums in 2006. In a 2016 interview, Skofterud announced that he narrowly escaped kidnapping while visiting Thailand in 2013 . She had already declared herself a lesbian in 2008. Vibeke Skofterud was reported missing by her partner on July 28, 2018. On July 29, Skofterud's body was found on the island of St. Helena near Færvik after her jet ski apparently collided with a rock and she was thrown ashore.
