Askim
Norwegian municipalityin the former province (Fylke)Østfold, todayViken. Since January 1, 2020, the city has been part of the newly founded municipality ofIndre Østfold.

The name of the city is derived from the Norwegian names Ask (ash) and Heim , which means home of the ash . Burial mounds and excavations show that the area along the course of Norway's longest river, Glomma , was settled a few thousand years ago. During the reign of Olav the Holy , the residents of Askim are said to have founded the city of Sarpsborg in 1016 . The town of Langnes in the municipality became famous through the battle of the Langnes Schanze between Swedish and Norwegian troops in 1814, which led to the end of the Swedish-Norwegian War and the conclusion of the Moss Convention . Askim received its city status in 1996 and is known for its high proportion of immigrants, its well-known library and cultural center. Askim has two cinemas and a bath, the Østfoldbad, in the middle of the city. There are three hydroelectric plants in the city (Vamma, Solbergfoss and Kykkelsrud). The Kraftfestival , a music and culture festival, has been held every August since 1995 . The highlight of the festival are the concerts in the turbine hall of the Kykkelsrud power plant.

The town's coat of arms dates from 1963. It shows three rivers and is supposed to represent the three waterfalls of the municipality, the Kykkelsrudfoss , Solbergfoss and the Vammafoss .
