Mirja Kyllikki Hietamies , after the wedding Mirja Kyllikki Hietamies-Eteläpää (born January 7, 1931 in Lemi , † March 14, 2013 in Savitaipale ) was a Finnish cross-country skier who started in the 1950s.

Career

Hietamies celebrated its first success on Holmenkollen in 1951, where he finished second over 10 km. A year later it started for Finland at the Olympic Winter Games in Oslo in 1952 , which were also held as the Nordic World Ski Championships. In the cross-country skiing competitions for women, which were held for the first time, she won the silver medal over 10 km behind her compatriot Lydia Wideman .

In 1953 Hietamies secured her first Finnish championship title over 10 km after winning only bronze in 1952.

A year later at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun in 1954 , Hietamies won the silver medal over 3 × 5 km together with Sirkka Polkunen and Siiri Rantanen . In the 10 km individual run she won her second medal and secured bronze. After winning the 10 km race at the Lahti Ski Games and in Ounasvaara twice in a row , she was voted Finnish Sportswoman of the Year in 1955 .

After she was able to win her second national title at the beginning of 1956, she graduated from her career by starting at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo . Together with Rantanen and Polkunen, she won the gold medal in the relay race over 3 × 5 km, becoming Olympic and world champion at the same time. In the individual run over 10 km she missed another Olympic medal in sixth place.

After her active career, Hietamies worked from 1965 to 1967 as a board member in the Finnish Ski Association . In 2013, Hietamies died in Savitaipale at the age of 82 .
