Sonja Viola Edström-Ruthström (born Edström; born November 18, 1930 in Luleå ) is a former Swedish cross-country skier .

Career

Edström, who started for the Luleå SK, competed internationally for the first time at the Olympic Winter Games in Oslo in 1952 and finished there in 11th place over 10 km. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1954 in Falun , she won the bronze medal with the relay. In 1955, 1956 and 1957 she won the Svenska Skidspelen over 10 km. In addition, she came second in this competition in 1952 and 1959. At the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo , she won the bronze medal with the relay and over 10 km. Also in 1956, she won the 10 km run at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival and the Lahti Ski Games . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1958 , she won the bronze medal with the relay. In addition, she took 22nd place over 10 km. Two years later she was at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley fifth over 10 km and Olympic champion with the relay.

Edström won the Swedish championships five times over 5 km (1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960) and seven times over 10 km (1953, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960). With the season she became champion in 1960.
