Steinkjer with the towns of Mære and Egge was a great historical center of power. Around 1030 the chiefs of Egge were among the main opponents of King Olav Haraldsson . Many significant archaeological finds, including the Tingvoll ship settlement , were made in the area around Steinkjer. According to Nordic legends, there is said to have been an older and even larger Viking trading post in front of Nidaros, today's Trondheim . The discovery of a button from the British Isles and also imported scales in Lø give rise to the assumption that this could have been in the area of today's Steinkjer.

The rock carvings at Bøla are Neolithic petroglyphs about 30 km north of Steinkjer . In addition, there are over 400 rock carvings from the younger Stone Age and the Bronze Age in the Bardal field on coastal road No. 17. There is a 12th century church in Mære, which was probably built in place of a pagan sacrificial site.

In 1940 Steinkjer was almost completely destroyed by bombs from the German air force . After the war, the city was rebuilt and today has the charm of post-war architecture. The reconstruction was only completed when the city received a new church in the center in 1965.

April 2015 was from the probe goers Magne Øksnes a 5.6 grams heavy silver Thor Hammer -Amulett from the Viking period (. Cal 800-950 AD..) Found. Finds of this kind are rare in Norway.

coat of arms

Old Steinkjer coat of arms

The coat of arms of Steinkjer before the union with Verran shows a six-pointed, silver star on a blue background. Designed by archivist Hallvard Trætteberg, it was introduced in 1957. Initially, the star referred to the six main streets that converged in the city. Since the municipal reform in 1964, the star has symbolized the main town Steinkjer and the six incorporated neighboring towns: Beitstad, Egge, Kvam, Ogndal, Sparbu and Stod.

In 2020 Steinkjer took over the Verran coat of arms. The coat of arms designed by Rolf Tidemann shows a boat that stands for the close connection to the fjord, for boat building and cruising.
