Career

Tønne studied economics at the Norwegian Business School in Bergen from 1968 to 1971 and later law at the University of Oslo . From 1974 to 1981 Tønne worked as a diplomat. On March 17, 2000, he was appointed Minister of Health in the Jens Stoltenberg I government. He held the post until the end of the government on October 19, 2001.

Investigation and death

In December 2002 it became known that Økokrim , the Norwegian agency for combating economic crime , was investigating him. The reason for this was that he accepted a fee of 1.5 million crowns while he was still receiving transitional allowances from the state for his time as minister. The case received extensive media coverage. Tønne himself is said to have testified that he applied for the transitional allowance because he did not know whether he would receive a fee for his work or not.

On December 20, Økokrim filed a criminal complaint against Tønne for serious negligent fraud . On the morning of December 21, he was reported missing by his family and found dead in his car that evening. It was later announced that it was suicide.
