Karita Bekkemellem (born January 15, 1965 in Lillehammer ) is a Norwegian manager and former politician of the social democratic Arbeiderpartiet (Ap). From March 2000 to October 2001 and again from October 2005 to October 2007 she was the minister for children in her country.

Career

Bekkemellem sat in the local parliament of Molde from 1987 to 1989 . Between 1989 and 2009 she was a member of the Norwegian Parliament, the Storting . She represented the province of Møre og Romsdal there . On March 17, 2000 she was appointed minister for children and families in the Jens Stoltenberg I government. She held her office until the government left on October 19, 2001. She then returned to Storting as a member of parliament, where she became a member of the parliamentary committee of the Arbeiderpartiet and second deputy chairwoman of the church, education and research committee. In the Jens Stoltenberg II government , she took over the ministry for children and families again on October 17, 2005 , which was transferred to the ministry for families and equality at the turn of the year 2005/06. She remained minister until October 18, 2007, when she was replaced by Manuela Ramin-Osmundsen against her will in a government reshuffle .

Between 1998 and 2007, Bekkemellem was part of the party executive. From 1998 to 2007 she was also the chairwoman of the women's working group within the Labor Party.

From 2009 on, Bekkemellem worked as managing director of the Association of Norwegian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers ( Legemiddelindustrien , LMI). In 2009 she published the book Mitt røde hjerte ( German : My red heart ). In May 2020 it was announced that she would become a member of the board of Humana , a private Swedish health company. Bekkemellem said she wanted to encourage more acceptance from private health providers in Norway.

Private

During her marriage to Jon Orheim from 1994 to 2005 she was called Karita Bekkemellem Orheim. The couple have two children together. In 2007 she married Stein Røsberg.
