Tora Aasland (born November 6,  1942 in Skien , Telemark ) is a Norwegian politician of the Socialist Left Party (SV) . From 2007 to 2012 she was Minister of Science with responsibility for research as well as professional and university training.

education

Aasland graduated from Telemark Commercial High School in 1961 and graduated from Colby Jr. College in New Hampshire , USA the following year. In 1965 she passed the exam at Norske Kvinners Nasjonalråds sosialskole . In 1973 she made the degree in sociology at the University of Oslo and conducted research at the Society Research Institute . She was general secretary of the non-fiction writers' association from 1983 to 1985.

Political activity

From 1975 to 1983 she was a member of the local parliament of Nesodden . In 1985 she was elected to Storting for the Akershus constituency and in 1991 appointed Fylkesmann in Rogaland (took office in 1993). Until her appointment as minister in 2007, she was the only SV politician who held the office of a Fylkesmannes. As a Fylkesmann, she was a member of numerous public committees. In 2005 she was named commander of the Order of Saint Olav for her social commitment.

During the cabinet reshuffle on October 18, 2007, Tora Aasland became Minister for Education with responsibility for vocational and university training and research in the Jens Stoltenberg II government . On March 23, 2012, the SV filled their cabinet positions and Aasland had to leave the government.
