In 2001 she was promoted to the position of deputy UP leader in the province of Rogaland. Since 2008 she has been a member of the AUF Reich Board.

From December 2006 to February 2008 Tajik was political advisor to the then Norwegian Labor Minister Bjarne Håkon Hanssen . In the same capacity, she worked with Prime Minister Stoltenberg (February to October 2008), Justice Minister Knut Storberget (October 2008 to March 2009) and Dag Terje Andersen , Minister of Labor, who was appointed in June 2008 . While serving at the Ministry of Justice, she was involved in what the Norwegian press dubbed the hijab affair . The ministry decided in early 2009 that Muslim women police officers could wear the hijab , but reversed this decision under public pressure. According to a report from the state broadcasting company NRK , which she did not comment on , Hadia Tajik made the original decision together with State Secretary Astri Aas-Hansen.

In October 2008, the Oslo branch of the Arbeiderpartiet nominated her for the parliamentary election in Norway, which is due one year later . She received the sixth place on the list, which is considered safe, replacing the initially planned politician Saera Khan , who had recently given up her candidacy due to a political scandal. In the election on September 14, 2009, Tajik won a seat in the Storting, as expected . She was then a member of the Church, Education and Research Committee of Parliament and was also a member of the election committee.

Hadia Tajik narrowly escaped the attack on Utøya in July 2011 . She had left the island together with long-time Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland shortly before the arrival of the assassin Anders Behring Breivik .

On September 21, 2012, Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg appointed her Minister of Culture of Norway at the age of 29, making her the youngest cabinet member in the country's history. After the parliamentary elections in autumn 2013 , the conservative politician Thorhild Widvey replaced her in this role. In 2013, Tajik took over the chairmanship of the Storting's judicial committee.

In April 2015 the Arbeiderpartiet elected her as deputy chairman. As head of her party's program commission, she presented the Social Democrats' party program for the period from 2017 to 2021 in February 2017. She has been Deputy Head of the Finance Committee in Parliament since 2017.

At the turn of the year 2017/18 she gained attention when she a. on her Facebook page spoke out clearly against her party colleague Trond Giske , who was accused at the time of having behaved inappropriately towards several women. While some party members thanked her for her clear stance, others accused her of wanting to gain political benefit from the affair and of weakening the position of the party leader, Jonas Gahr Støre, who was actually responsible for dealing with the case .
