Helga Pedersen (born January 13, 1973 in Sør-Varanger ) is a Norwegian politician of the Social Democratic Workers' Party (Ap). From October 2005 to October 2009 she was the Minister for Fisheries and Coastal Affairs in her country.

Political career

Helga Pedersen studied history and Russian and worked as a consultant for the county council of the former province of Finnmark and as a teacher. From 1997 she was secretary for youth work for the Young Social Democrats (AUF) in Finnmark.

Pedersen was a member of the Finnmark Fylkesting from 1999 to 2005 . In 2003 she was elected President of the Assembly ( Fylkesordfører ). She was political adviser in the Ministry of Economic Affairs 17 April to 19 October 2001. From 17 October 2005 to 20 October 2009 led them to succeed Svein Ludvigsen the Ministry of Fisheries in the second cabinet of Jens Stoltenberg . From 2007 to 2015 she was deputy chairwoman of the Arbeiderpartiet.

Pedersen represented Finnmark in the Norwegian parliament, the Storting, from 2009 to 2017 . From 2009 to 2013 she was a member of the Election and Foreign Affairs and Defense Committees. Between 2013 and 2017 she was deputy chair of the local and administrative committee. From October 2009 to September 2013 she was group leader of the Ap, then until June 2015 deputy chairwoman.

After the end of her time in Storting, Pedersen returned to her home town of Tana . After she became the top candidate of the Ap for the Sameting election in 2017 in 2016 , she withdrew from it in the same year because of an internal dispute. Instead, she started working as a sheep farmer and political teacher. In October 2019 she was elected as the new mayor of the municipality of Tana .
