Øystein Kåre Djupedal (born May 5, 1960 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian politician of the Sosialistisk Venstreparti (SV).

Political career

Djupedal was a member of the Fylkesting of Sør-Trøndelag from 1991 to 1993 . He was first elected to Storting in 1993 , to which he belonged until 2009. There he represented the then province of Sør-Trøndelag. Between 1997 and 2005 he was deputy chairman of the SV.

On October 17, 2005, he was appointed Minister of Education and Research. On January 1, 2006, the name changed to Minister of Science. He held the office until October 18, 2007. During his tenure, he created a stricter framework for private schools.

After he was appointed in 2008, he took up the post of Fylkesmann von Aust-Agder in 2009 and remained in office until 2015. His appointment was criticized from some quarters because he had no connection to the province and he had actually applied for the same post in Nord-Trøndelag . In 2015 he applied for the office of Fylkesmann in the newly founded province of Agder , but was not elected.

In 2015 he announced that he had left the SV and joined the Arbeiderpartiet. He also said that he thinks his political career is over.
