Bård Vegar Solhjell (born December 22, 1971 in Kristiansand ) is a Norwegian politician of the Socialist Left Party (SV). He was the education minister from October 2007 to October 2009 and the environment minister from March 2012 to October 2013 .

Life

Solhjell grew up in Naustdal . Between 1991 and 2000 he studied political science at the University of Bergen and the University of Oslo . From 1992 to 1994 he was the deputy chairman of the youth organization Sosialistisk Ungdom (SU). From 2000 to 2001 he worked as a political advisor to the SV parliamentary group in the Norwegian national parliament in Storting . He was then the general secretary of his party until 2005.

On October 17, 2005, Solhjell began his work as State Secretary in the Statsministerenskontor , the Prime Minister's office. He was then Minister of Education from October 18, 2007 to October 20, 2009 and was responsible for schools and kindergartens. In the general election in 2009 , he moved into a first Storting. There he represented the then Akershus Province until 2017 . He acted in November 2009 and again from March 2010 to March 2012 as parliamentary group leader of the SV. On March 23, 2012, Solhjell was appointed Environment Minister in the Stoltenberg II cabinet. He held this office until he left the government on October 16, 2013. After his return to parliament, he became deputy group leader, which he remained until December 2015. From 2007 to 2015 Solhjell was deputy party leader of the SV.

After serving in Parliament, Solhjell was General Secretary in the Norwegian branch of WWF from 2018 . In November 2019 he was appointed director of Norad, the Norwegian development agency.

Solhjell has already published several books. In 2011 he gave Solidaritet på ny , in 2014 Sjakk - ei kjærleikshistorie and in 2017 Uro. A historie om Norges framtid out.
