The United Democratic Left ( Greek Ενιαία Δημοκρατική Αριστερά , United Democratic Left , Association of Democratic Left ', abbreviated EDA ) was primarily in the years before the Greek military dictatorship active political party in Greece .

founding

The party was founded by well-known left-wing politicians in July 1951 as a merger of several left-wing parties, many of whom were former members of the ELAS People's Liberation Army ( Greek Ελληνικός / Εθνικός Λαϊκός Απελευθερωτικός Στρα ]τός [ΕΛΑΣτρα ]τός [ΕΛΑΣτρα ]τός [ΕΛΑΣλληνικός / Εθνικός Λαϊκός Απελευθερωτικός] . It was originally intended to serve as a substitute for, or the political arm of, the banned Communist Party of Greece (KKE), but it gained its own more pluralistic and moderate profile.

development

The EDA participated in all elections in Greece from 1952 to 1964 . In the parliamentary elections in 1958, it became the largest opposition party with a share of the vote of 24.42 percent.

In the parliamentary elections in 1961 and 1964, the FDFA indirectly supported the Enosis Kendrou (EK, Center Union ) against the Ethniki Rizospastiki Enosis (ERE, National Radical Union ). In 1961 and 1963 it achieved 14.34 percent of the votes and in 1964 11.8 percent.

Before the parliamentary elections in 1963, Greece experienced political unrest following the murder of the EDA MP Grigoris Lambrakis . The EDA and the EC blamed Prime Minister Konstantin Karamanlis and his National Radical Union ERE for the murder. Demonstrations, some of which were violent, endangered political stability. An independent investigation by investigating magistrate Christos Sartzetakis came to the conclusion that extreme right-wing circles with links to the police and the secret service were responsible for the murder, but no direct involvement of leading circles could be proven.

During the Greek military dictatorship from 1967 to 1974, the EDA and its members were persecuted by the regime.

resolution

After the restoration of democracy, the EDA, led by the prominent Greek left-wing politician Ilias Iliou, ran in the 1974 parliamentary elections in an alliance of the United Left with the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and other left-wing parties; the United Left came in at 9.89 percent. In the 1977 election, she joined the KKE Esoterikou ('Inlands-KKE') (2.72 percent). In 1981 and 1985 she only appeared in lists with the Panhellenic Socialist Movement " Panellinio Sosialistiko Kinima " (PASOK).

Lambrakis youth

In September 1964, in June 1963 after the assassination of EDA deputy was Grigoris Lambrakis first as Democratic Youth Movement Grigoris Lambrakis ( Greek Δημοκρατική Κίνηση Νέων Γρηγόρης Λαμβράκης [ΔΚΝΓΛ] founded) Democratic Lambrakis Youth ( Greek Δημοκρατική Νεολαία Λαμπράκη ) with the youth organization of the EDA unites. The "Lambrakiden" represented a dynamic political youth organization. They played an active role in the violent, sometimes violent demonstrations in the middle of the sixties, but were also involved in educational work and for the electrification of villages. Its first chairman was Mikis Theodorakis . Later the Lambrakis youth practically merged into the political youth organization “Rigas Feraios”, which was linked to the Euro-Communist-oriented KKE (Inland).
