history

Legal development

Today's company Testo SE & Co. KGaA was founded in 1957 as a thermometer construction department of the Lenzkirch branch of Atmos Fritzsching & Co. GmbH Viernheim . Atmos Fritzsching & Co. GmbH was a company active in Viernheim in the medical sector, which had its origins in the Kaiser-Friedrichs Apotheke , founded in Berlin in 1888 . The company manufactured pharmaceuticals as well as medical suction pumps.

Paul Fritzsching , Managing Director of Boehringer & Sons in Mannheim , took a stake in the company in the 1930s because he was interested in the pharmacy's own developments in medical technology. After first bringing the brand and company to Mannheim, the apparatus construction company came to Freiburg im Breisgau in 1938 . There “ Small compressors for technical, commercial, medical and scientific purposes” were manufactured in Rosastraße 9 . When the Freiburg plant was destroyed in an air raid in 1944, the plant was relocated to Lenzkirch in the Black Forest. Hans Bauer, the founder of the thermometer construction department, developed an electronic clinical thermometer with an analog display by 1957. Shortly afterwards, the measuring device was expanded in such a way that it had a much larger measuring range than would have been necessary for determining body temperature. Therefore it was marketed as a second thermometer for industry and research. The product range developed continuously, but moved more and more away from the medical area of Atmos. For this reason, on April 1, 1981, all employees in the electrical measuring devices division moved to the new company Testoterm KG Fritzsching, Viernheim, Lenzkirch plant .

In 1984 the Atmos Fritzsching & Co. GmbH operation of electronic measuring devices was converted into Testoterm Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG , which was now responsible for development and production. The sales company continued to operate under the name Testoterm Fritzsching GmbH & Co. KG. On January 1, 1993, the two companies merged to form Testoterm Fritzsching GmbH & Co. Managing directors were Gerd Knospe, Wolfgang Hessler and Peter Greiser. Since the product range now went far beyond temperature measurement, the term suffix term was no longer appropriate. Therefore, in July 1993, the company name changed to Testo GmbH & Co.

In 1999, Testo took over 75% of Atmos Medizin Technik GmbH & Co. KG and thus its former parent company. In the same year, the Testo Industrial Services division was spun off. On January 1, 2002, testo GmbH & Co. was converted to testo AG. However, the shares remained in private hands and are not traded on the stock exchange.

In 2005 the Atmos managing directors paid out their shareholder Testo.

On July 1, 2010, the company acquired 100% of the shares in Matter Engineering AG , based in Wohlen, Switzerland . The 16 employees who have specialized in devices for dust measurement continued to work there in the Matter Aerosol AG created by the takeover . The subsidiary has since been deleted and integrated into the mother.

Testo Sensor GmbH was founded in January 2011 . It develops, produces and sells temperature sensors that are installed, for example, in heating and solar systems, for air conditioning in cars or in coffee machines. In 2011, what was then Testo AG offered its extended management 5% of the shares for purchase. The package of shares offered was oversubscribed .

In summer 2016, the legal form of the company changed from Testo AG to Testo SE & Co. KGaA. In March 2017, construction work began on a second building in Titisee, which from the outside will correspond to the first. They are supposed to last two years [obsolete] .

Location development

The Testo location in Titisee on the B 31

The thermometer construction department of Atmos began in the attic of the old school building in Unterlenzkirch. In 1963 the company moved into the villa of the former watch factory in Lenzkirch . Immediately after this building, on the area of the now closed Lenzkirch train station , new production and administration buildings were built in 1971, 1975, 1978, 1982, 1990, 2001 and 2007, so that a total of 800 people were employed in Lenzkirch. Since the capacities in Lenzkirch were exhausted, the construction of the first of a total of four buildings in Titisee began in the spring of 2010 , in which around 250 people have been employed since the beginning of 2012. The second construction phase for Titisee was planned for 2017/2018, so that the site in Titisee will offer space for up to 1200 employees in the final stage. With completion and the move into the second building, Testo relocated its headquarters to Titisee-Neustadt , but the Lenzkirch location will remain.

controversy

In March 2016, the IG Metall union turned to the press and accused the Lenzkirch measurement technology company Testo of preventing the establishment of a works council for several years . All initiatives of the workforce and the union were torpedoed by the management. A secret ballot showed that the employees would not want a works council. In the run-up, however, subtle pressure was exerted on the employees and the unions were prevented from informing the workforce. Instead, the management level campaigned for an alternative system of employee representation, the so-called staff committee.

At the beginning of 2017, a case of fraud became known within Testo. A long-time employee of the company is said to have embezzled 1.5 million euros between 2008 and 2015. To do this, she used the company's voucher system. The company filed a criminal complaint.
