Rudolf Thauer the Younger

Rudolf "Rolf" Kurt Thauer (born October 5, 1939 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German microbiologist, founding director of the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology and, since 2005, a professor emeritus at the Department of Biology at the Philipps University in Marburg .

Life

Thauer is the son of Rudolf Thauer the Elder . Thauer first studied medicine at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt. After completing the Physikum in 1961, he switched to biochemistry and graduated from the University of Tübingen with a diploma in 1966 . At the University of Freiburg , he was two years later Dr. rer. nat. also PhD in biochemistry. In 1971 the habilitation in this subject followed at the same university . For a year he then went to a US university institute in Cleveland . As early as 1972 he accepted a professorship for biochemistry at the Ruhr University in Bochum . Three years later he moved to a better-equipped microbiology professorship in Marburg. From 1976 until his retirement in 2005 he stayed at Philipps University. From 1991 to 2007 he was director of the biochemistry department at the MPI for Terrestrial Microbiology in Marburg. Since November 2007 he has been chairman of an emeritus group at the MPI Marburg .

Rudolf Thauer has been a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 1984 and a corresponding member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1990 . In 1990 he was accepted as a full member of the Academia Europaea . He is an elected member of the Board of Trustees of the Marburg University Association .

  • In 1993, the bacterial genus Thauera Macy et al. named from the family Rhodocyclaceae .
  • A research group in which Thauer was involved published groundbreaking research results on the metabolic energy of Clostridium kluyveri on January 15, 2008 in the online edition of the PNAS ( Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences ) .
  • Thauer personally prefers the short form Rolf as the nickname. Therefore, many such sources can be found in official announcements of the University Press Office in Marburg.
