The trade association for industrial companies in Baden e. V. (wvib, also wvib Schwarzwald AG) is an independent trade association for family-oriented industrial medium-sized companies in all branches of industry . The association currently (2020) comprises more than 1,000 medium-sized manufacturing companies based in 14 districts of the Black Forest region of Baden-Württemberg , as well as a few in Bavaria , France and Switzerland with 380,000 employees worldwide and an annual turnover of 74 billion euros.

The association sees itself as a mouthpiece and service provider for family-owned, medium-sized industrial companies in Baden-Württemberg, which are also globally successful beyond the metropolitan areas. Around 60 full-time employees work at wvib.

Since 1999 the head office has been the wvib house on Merzhauser Strasse in Freiburg im Breisgau . Wvib Schwarzwald AG has been operating a permanent branch in Stuttgart since 2019.

History and members

The origins of the association lie in the industrial associations created in 1946 in the French occupation zone . 44 members from four of these professional associations (mechanical engineering and foundries, wire drawing and cold rolling mills, metal processing, metal foundries) founded the overarching “Fachvereinigung der Metallindustrie” in 1946, based in the Freiburg district of St. Georgen . In doing so, the founding members reacted to the economic and political framework, in particular to the dismantling, economic decentralization and the lack of raw materials and other production resources. The association initially functioned primarily as a metal exchange. In the long term, these conditions of development caused the special character of the wvib as an industrial association of entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs with a focus on the exchange of experiences and the self-help of its members.

In 1948, the members renamed the association to “Wirtschaftsverband Eisen- und Metallindustrie Baden e. V. ”, from 1966 the abbreviation wvib became common, in 1969 the association got its name which is still valid today. The long term of office of the Freiburg economist Magda Scheffelt, who was chief executive officer from 1957 to 1985, was one of the few women in the federal German association landscape of the post-war period. It reorganized the association, introduced criteria for measurability and oriented itself towards the specific needs of medium-sized entrepreneurs. In 1980 she received the Federal Cross of Merit for her services.

The core of the member companies has its origins in structural change in the Black Forest - especially in the watchmaking industry - which can be traced back to the early 19th century. In the course of the industrial revolution , family handicraft businesses (see: publishing system ) gave rise to the first precision engineering industries. One example of this are the companies in the so-called “Gear Valley”, which developed from manufacturers of drive technology to suppliers to the automotive industry. The well-represented plastics industry also supplies many of the vehicle manufacturers. The town of Todtnau used to be home to many traditional brush makers, from which u. a. the company Zahoransky AG developed, which produces special machines for the production of brushes. In the post-war decades, the optical industry gradually changed in the direction of modern sensor technology - a trend that continues to this day. Precision mechanics and cutlers developed u. a. in the direction of medical technology, with a special focus in the Tuttlingen area .

The association refers to the entirety of medium-sized companies in the association region as the "Schwarzwald AG". In 2014 the accounting company (GmbH) of the registered association wvib was converted into a so-called small stock corporation, the "wvib Schwarzwald AG".

Services

The core of the wvib's range of services since 1965 has been the organized exchange of experience at the level of company bosses, owners and managing directors. This format for exchanging experiences has been gradually expanded to include around fifty different operational specialist and management groups.

The association conducts seminars and courses within the framework of the wvib academy and also offers, for example, the placement of management personnel, annual, regional and sector-specific economic surveys as well as a regional or professional group adjusted wage and salary comparison.

Every two years, the association has been organizing the three-day industrial fair i + e in Freiburg since 1983, with 364 exhibitors and almost 10,000 visitors. In 2018 the trade fair was renamed to industrial fair ie.

Positions

The top of the association regularly expresses itself on topics that affect family-run industrial medium-sized companies in the region. This included the positive assessment of the transatlantic free trade agreement TTIP and the adoption of a resolution on the refugee issue by the member companies at the 2015 annual general meeting. Association President Klaus Endress represented the position of affected family businesses on the reform of inheritance tax in Germany. In February 2016, a thesis paper for better education was presented together with IG Metall Freiburg, the IHK Südlicher Oberrhein and the IHK Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg . At the annual general meeting of the wvib in November 2016, Klaus Endress formulated an appeal for the European idea and free trade, which he combined with sharp criticism of populists such as Donald Trump , the AfD and the French Front National .

In March 2017, committees and members of the association initiated an initiative called "Unity.Right.Freedom.", With which they won "decisive political decisions this year" (Klaus Endress) numerous supporters for democracy, the rule of law, the social market economy and Europe could.
