geography

View of Lenzkirch

location

The place is in the Black Forest, in the high valley of the Haslach river , which flows into the Gutach on the southeastern edge of the municipality , which is called Wutach from there on . The Urseetal , a glacier valley, runs towards the village from the southwest .

The highest point in the municipality is at 1197  m on the Hochfirst in the Saig district on the border with the municipality of Titisee-Neustadt . From the tower on the Hochfirst you have a good view of the Swiss and, when the visibility is clear, the French Alps .

structure

The following districts belong to the municipality of Lenzkirch:

  • Lenzkirch (3341 inhabitants) with the villages of Lenzkirch and Grünwald . Grünwald lies at an altitude of almost 1000  m . The village came to Lenzkirch in 1976 as part of the community reform; previously it belonged to the then independent community of Holzschlag , then to Bonndorf for one year as part of its incorporation . The former Pauliner monastery in Grünwald was founded around 1350. In the small church there is a late Gothic sandstone relief (Life of Christ).
  • Saig (812 inhabitants) is a climatic health resort on the southern slope of the Hochfirst and, at around 1000  m, is the highest district of Lenzkirch. There are around 1200 guest beds here.
  • Kappel (785 inhabitants). The climatic health resort is located at around 900  m on the southeast slope of the Hochfirstrück (around 600 guest beds). The Wutach Gorge begins below Kappel .
  • Raitenbuch (152 inhabitants), a farming settlement west of Lenzkirch above the Ursee valley at an altitude of about 940  m , near the Windgfall pond .

Neighboring communities

Lenzkirch is surrounded by the municipalities (clockwise from the north) Titisee-Neustadt , Friedenweiler , Löffingen , Bonndorf , Schluchsee , Feldberg and Hinterzarten , all of which except Bonndorf ( Waldshut district ) belong to the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district .

climate

Climate diagram Lenzkirch

Due to the altitude, Lenzkirch has slightly cooler temperatures than most other places in Baden-Württemberg. The climate is characterized by the fact that it has a particularly gentle effect on the air and a stimulating effect on the organism through a high proportion of oxygen, wind and plenty of sun, which is why it was awarded the title of " health resort ".

history

Lenzkirch goes back to the founding of the Alemanni tribe of the Lentiens . The rule of Lenzkirch went to the Counts of Lupfen in 1296 . At the beginning of the 14th century, the Knights of Blumegg came into the possession of the Lenzkirch rule. For a short time in the 14th century parts of the rule belonged to the Order of St. John . In 1491 the Counts of Fürstenberg acquired the rule of the Blumeggern and were the sovereigns until the Rhine Confederation Act of 1806 and the associated mediatization of the Principality of Fürstenberg . With the principality Lenzkirch came to the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806 . However, the Fürstenbergers still have large estates in the region today.

On July 1, 1972, the municipality of Raitenbuch, on October 1, 1974, the municipality of Saig and on January 1, 1975 the municipality of Kappel was incorporated into Baden-Württemberg as part of the municipal reform .

Community partnerships

Lenzkirch has been in partnership with the French municipality of Jugon-les-Lacs in Brittany since 1975 .

Economy and Infrastructure

As a climatic health resort, tourism plays an important role in the local economy. But also the precision engineering industry, following the traditional Black Forest watch industry, is of greater importance for the economic development of Lenzkirch.

traffic

Lenzkirch is located on the federal highway 315 between Schaffhausen in Switzerland and Titisee . The thoroughfare is mainly used by tourists in summer. Two bus lines run through Lenzkirch, line 7258 from Neustadt via Lenzkirch to Bonndorf and line 7257 from Titisee to Lenzkirch. In Titisee there is a connection to the regional trains to Freiburg Hbf ; In Neustadt a transition to regional traffic to Donaueschingen and further to Ulm or Rottweil is possible with another change to Stuttgart .

The almost 20 km long railway line from Kappel-Gutachbrücke to Bonndorf , built in 1907 and closed in 1976, ran via Lenzkirch. There she made a hairpin . Today the Bähnleradweg leads along the route without major differences in altitude to the neighboring Bonndorf about 15 km away and in the other direction to Neustadt . This is part of the Southern Black Forest Cycle Route , which leads around the Southern Black Forest Nature Park .

Public facilities

As a health resort, Lenzkirch has a health resort and a health resort park . A public outdoor pool is available to guests and locals. There is also a cinema in the Höfle .

Catholic churches

St. Nicholas Church next to the town hall in the town center
Christ Church in Lenzkirch

The parishes of the Catholic Church belong to the Eastern Black Forest pastoral care unit .

  • The Catholic parish church of Lenzkirch is dedicated to St. Nicholas . It was originally built in the Weinbrenner style in 1818 according to plans by Gottlieb Lumpp . In 1935, a new church based on a design by the Stuttgart architect Otto Linder was built across the corner from the tower that had been retained from the previous church, so that Lumpp only left the tower on the medieval tower.
  • The baroque Eulogius Chapel is now a cemetery chapel.
  • The parish church of Kappel, consecrated to St. Gallus , with its characteristic onion dome was first mentioned in 1275.
  • The Church of St. Johannes Baptista in Saig was built in 1412. Despite being destroyed during the war in 1713, the tower and choir of this building were preserved.
  • The church in Grünwald is the former monastery church of the otherwise disappeared Grünwald monastery of the Paulines , which was built around 1350. Inside there are some art treasures worth seeing.

Protestant church

For the first time in 1895 there is talk of a Lenzkirch Evangelical Cooperative. Services were initially held in the council chamber. It was not until 1952 that the Protestant church in Lenzkirch was consecrated after the church had been interrupted due to the war.

schools

The Sommerbergschule has been a primary and technical secondary school since 2010 . Secondary schools are located in neighboring Titisee-Neustadt.

The Franz Josef Faller School is a privately owned community school for the Black Forest .

Kindergartens

There is a kindergarten each in Lenzkirch, Kappel and Saig. The Lenzkirch children's home is also located in Lenzkirch.

Established businesses

The best-known Lenzkirch company is Testo , a manufacturer of environmental measuring instruments (temperature measurement, etc.). Other larger companies are the companies ATMOS Medizintechnik GmbH & Co. KG, Mesa Parts GmbH and the private brewery Rogg.

Formerly known worldwide was the Aktiengesellschaft für Uhrenfabrikation Lenzkirch (AGUL), which was one of the leading watchmaking companies in the Black Forest in the early 20th century .

Culture and sights

The place is on the German Clock Road .

The attraction of Lenzkirch lies in the landscape in the surrounding region around the Titisee and the Schluchsee. Alt-Urach Castle is located in Lenzkirch .

Regular events

The Eulogius ride takes place on the Sunday before June 25th in honor of St. Eligius . The feast day is also called Eulogi , as Eligius is known as Eulogius in southern Germany. Eligius is the patron saint of many craftsmen, including goldsmiths and farriers. He has also been the patron saint of horses since the 17th century. In Lenzkirch there has been a chapel dedicated to Eligius since 1595. The chapel became increasingly the destination of pilgrimages in the 18th century. The Eulogius Ride was not carried out for the first time until 1934. From 1937 to 1945 it was stopped by the Nazi regime because the organizers did not allow themselves to be co-opted for the blood-and-soil ideology . In 1947 the Eulogi ride was resumed. The equestrian procession leads from the St. Nikolauskirche in Lenzkirch to the Eulogius Chapel, which has also been a cemetery chapel since 1820. After an outdoor service, the route leads back to St. Nicholas Church, which is controversial. Then the 200-300 horses and their riders are blessed by a clergyman who sits on the honorary white horse. Then the Eulogimarkt - a fair - takes place.
