history

Gottenheim was first mentioned in 1086 in a document from the St. Georgen monastery . The Vogt von Reichenau donated three parcels of vineyards to the monastery in the Gottenheim district.

District map from 1883 with field names

In the years 1350, 1564 and 1633 Gottenheim was hit by the plague . In the time of the Reformation , the place belonging to the front of Austria remained Catholic. In 1525, during the Peasants' War, peasants also rose up against their landlords in Gottenheim. This uprising was put down in the same year.

In the time of the Wars of Liberation , during which high taxes were also required of the residents of Breisgau, Gottenheim had to go into debt. After the famine years of 1816 and 1817 , another period of great dearth and famine followed from 1850 to 1855.

In the 19th century, the cultivation of hemp was of some importance. When the price of hemp fell drastically due to the import of Italian hemp - as a result of the construction of the Gotthard Railway , people started to grow tobacco .

In December 2010 a partnership between Gottenheim and the Freiburg district of Herdern was sealed.

Green spaces and recreation

Gottenheim has a well-preserved "old vineyard" that was not "land-cleared" like many other vineyards in the 1960s and 1970s. There are many typical small terraces, narrow field paths and hidden embankment paths that have been “grown” by hand. For example, more than 100 of the so-called “Rebhisli” (vineyard huts) are on the Rebhisli tour in the old “Gottemer Rebberg”.

Regular events

  • The Gottenheim Wine and Street Festival (traditionally also "Hahlerai Festival") takes place every two years in early September. It is a cozy street festival in lovingly decorated arbours and wine-growing yards.
  • The annual concert of the Gottenheim Music Association at the beginning of the year is the musical highlight of the year in Gottenheim. Under the direction of conductor Andreas Thoman, the Musikverein performs demanding brass music.
  • The Gottenheimer "Rebhisli Tour": The Gottenheim winegrowers 'cooperative and the Gottenheim winery Thomas Maurer as well as the neighboring Waltershofen winegrowers' cooperative organize the Gottemer Rebhisli tour together every year on "Ascension Day" and "Father's Day".
