Oberried is a German municipality in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district in the state of Baden-Württemberg .
geography
Geographical location
Oberried is located in the southern Dreisamtal and extends with its municipality up to the highest mountains in the Black Forest: Feldberg , Toter Mann , Hinterwaldkopf and Schauinsland . The Oberrieder valley with its Brugga river in the west stretches east from the Schauinsland up to the Notschrei pass . The Zastlertal with the Osterbach and the St. Wilhelmer Tal branch off to the east in the direction of Feldberg / Toter Mann. The Hofsgrund district is located in a hollow south of the Schauinsland summit.
Community structure
The municipality of Oberried with the independent municipalities of St. Wilhelm, Hofsgrund and Zastler until the 1970s included 53 villages, Zinken , farms and houses. The village of Oberried, the district of Weilersbach and the Zinken Geroldstal, Hintertal, Obertal and Vörlinsbach belong to the municipality of Oberried in the 1973 boundaries. The former municipality of St. Wilhelm includes the tines Katzensteig and Wittenbach, the Gäufmatte homestead and the residential areas Erlenbach (erhütte), Hinterer Schneeberg, Schmelzplatz, Steinwasen (partly also part of the Schauinsland municipality), Stübenwasen, Vorderer Schneeberg and Vordertal. The former community of Schauinsland includes the village of Hofsgrund, the Zinken Brenden, Umgebung, Holzarbeit, Rain, Steinwasen (partly also part of the community of St. Wilhelm) and Talbach, the courtyards Bodenmatte, Lochmatte and Poche and the residential areas Halde (n) and Muggenmatte (Schneeloch ). The former community of Zastler includes the Adamshof, Burghardtshof, Gassenbauernhof, Glaserhausenhof, Jockelehof and -berghaus, Mederlehof, Schweizerhaus, Schweizerhof, Stefansgütle, Stollenbacherhof and Winterhalterhof and Schmiede and the residential areas Antoniushäusle, Breiterackerhaus, Bürstenholzfabrik, Krummholiszengütle, Försterhaus, Holzfabrik Mederleberghaus, Roteck, Schulhaus, Taddäushäusle, Weilersbacher Viehhütte and Zähringerhaus. In the parish part of St. Wilhelm is the abandoned castle " Wilde Schneeburg ".

history
Until the 19th century
The "Tal ob dem Ried" was populated since the early 12th century and was largely owned by the St. Gallen monastery .
In the Rotulus Sanpetrinus at the beginning of the 13th century a property of the monastery of St. Peter in Obirrieth is mentioned.
At the behest of the Provost of Strasbourg, Rudolf von Tengen , a Cistercian convent was built in 1237 in Wilhelmertal , which was settled by nuns from Günterstal monastery . It was passed to the Wilhelmites as early as 1252 and was initially referred to as St. Wilhelm Monastery , but in 1308 as Oberried Monastery . In 1342 Johannes Giving was from the branch line of the Giving-Schüser Vogt of the Oberried monastery . After the Vogteirechte over Oberried was initially transferred to the Schnewelins , they fell to the city of Freiburg im Breisgau in 1496.
In 1507 the Wilhelmites left the Wilhelmertal and moved to the St. Wilhelm monastery in Freiburg . Today's Oberried monastery was founded in 1683 after the destruction of the Freiburg Wilhelmiterkloster during the Thirty Years War in Wilhelmertal, where the monks first fled in 1682, initially through the purchase of the Steierthof, which was also destroyed. The Wilhelmites built the monastery in Oberried in 1684 and moved into it in 1687. The baroque monastery church was consecrated in 1699. In 1724 the Benedictines from St. Blasien took over the monastery and continued to run it as a priory .
In 1806, Oberried fell to the newly established Grand Duchy of Baden as part of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss . There it was first assigned to the Freiburg II regional office, and from 1819 to the combined Freiburg regional office.

Districts
Hofsgrund has been part of the Oberried community since 1974. The small town with about 600 inhabitants is located in a valley basin at the foot of the Schauinsland.
St. Wilhelm was founded in 1266 by Johannes von Urberg as a branch of the Oberrieder monastery. The developing settlement around the monastery was soon after the Wilhelmites "St. Wilhelm "called. Although the monastery still existed until the Thirty Years War, the bailiwick rights were transferred to Austria in 1496 . In 1806 St. Wilhelm fell to the Grand Duchy of Baden. There it was first assigned to the Freiburg II regional office, and from 1819 to the combined Freiburg regional office. Since 1939, St. Wilhelm belonged to the Freiburg district. On October 1, 1974, St. Wilhelm was incorporated into Oberried. The district has about 260 inhabitants.
Zastler has been part of the Oberried community since 1974. About 450 people live here.

Oberried belongs with the communities Kirchzarten, Buchenbach and Stegen to Gemeindeverwaltungsverband Dreisamtal based in Kirchzarten.
City Hall and Mayor
The town hall is located in one wing of the monastery building, the other two wings belong to the parish.
In January 2013, Klaus Vosberg was elected as the new mayor in the first ballot. Franz-Josef Winterhalter had previously held the office for 24 years.

The local elections on May 26, 2019 led to the following result with a turnout of 73.9 percent (2014: 68.0%):

Economy and Infrastructure
The Tourism plays a considerable role in Oberried. In winter, the ski lifts at the Stollenbacher Hütte and in Hofsgrund as well as the cross-country skiing on the Schauinsland and around the Notschrei contribute to this, in summer the Steinwasen Park and the excellent, sometimes challenging hiking opportunities, for example on the Notschrei, from the Erlenbacher Hütte or on the Alpine Path .
The bus line 7215 of the Südbadenbus company connects the community on the one hand with Kirchzarten and Freiburg, on the other hand on the state road 126 via the Notschrei with Todtnau in the Wiesental . There is a connection to the Höllentalbahn at Kirchzarten station .
The Schauinslandstraße runs from Freiburg to Notschrei above Hofsgrund .
Culture and sights
Buildings
- The old Wilhelmiten, later Benedictine monastery and the monastery church, the pilgrimage church of the Coronation of Mary, date from the end of the 17th century. In the church there is a large pilgrimage crucifix from the mid-15th century.

The Kulturkreis Oberried annually organizes a small concert series "Concert in the monastery" with 5 to 6 concerts of ancient chamber music , which are performed in the pilgrimage church or in the inner courtyard of the monastery. Because of the special acoustics , some concerts are recorded by the SWR2 radio .

The Barbarastollen is located near Oberried . In this disused silver mine shaft which supports the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance since 1975, at that time as the Federal Association for self-protection , microfilm copies of important cultural assets one. In the rooms of the former monastery building, a treasure trove of books known as the “monastery library” is kept, which contains the majority of the writings of the theologian, musicologist and historian Martin Gerbert , a former prince of St. Blasien, in original editions.
Every year in autumn an Alemannic week takes place in Oberried , which is dedicated to maintaining the local dialect and local customs. One of the highlights is the cattle drive of the Erlenbacher Pasture Cooperative from the summer pasture at the Erlenbacher Hut .
The Rappeneck with the Rappenecker Hütte, which is considered Europe's first solar-powered restaurant, also belongs to the municipality of Oberried .
In 2006, a mountain of peace was set up for the first time in Germany in Oberried . The site is near the Stollenbacher Hut .
