The SBG Südbadenbus GmbH is a regional bus company with operational headquarters in Karlsruhe and legal headquarters in Freiburg im Breisgau . It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of DB Regio AG .

history

The SBG came into being in 1989 when the rail buses of the German Federal Railroad were spun off into regional bus companies, becoming a GmbH based in Freiburg im Breisgau.

Together with four other DB bus companies in Baden-Württemberg, the SBG has been operating as the DB Regio Bus Region Baden-Württemberg since June 2016 . The Freiburg headquarters was dissolved in this context. Since then, the company has been managed by the new Karlsruhe headquarters for the five companies. However, the company continues to exist as a legal entity.

Companies

In 2016, the company had over 600 employees, 530 of whom were bus drivers, and operates 143 bus routes with partner companies. The 247 city buses come from the manufacturers MAN , Mercedes-Benz , Setra and Iveco.

In addition to a branch of the Karlsruhe headquarters at the old company headquarters in Freiburg, SBG has branches in Freiburg, Villingen and Waldshut-Tiengen , which are responsible for the actual ride, and five further customer centers are operated.

As part of the standardization of the Deutsche Bahn brands, the Südbadenbus brand was more closely related to the DB Group in the course of the second half of 2008. The buses were repainted in the color “ traffic red” , which was the standard for all DB bus routes, and the logo was also changed, and the website was integrated into the corporate identity. DB rail transport tickets are, however, generally only recognized on rail-parallel routes and a few non-rail-parallel overland routes, despite the branding integration into the DB Group.

Since the wage costs of its own in-house collective bargaining agreement are above the market level, SBG was and still has no chance in most of the line tenders prescribed by EU law by the municipal transport authorities and has lost a considerable part of its mileage since 2017. On December 1, 2019, it lost all lines in the area of the Tuttlingen district , where these have been served exclusively by subcontractors for years. As of December 15, 2019 , the area of the Schwarzwald-Baar district, newly designated as the Südbaar traffic network , with traffic routes around Donaueschingen , Bräunlingen , Hüfingen and Blumberg, will be sent to competitors. On January 1, 2020, the SBG lost almost the entire traffic area of the district of Konstanz to competitors, only the cross-border line 7349 Singen - Stein am Rhein is still in production. This is operated by the Villingen branch, as the Radolfzell branch has been completely closed. The actually ongoing operation of the Radolfzell city bus on behalf of the Radolfzell municipal utilities was transferred to the Behringer transport company, which was also used in the new tendering of the transport services on behalf of the Constance district.

In addition to competing services, commercial offers were also abandoned, for example the airport bus from Freiburg to EuroAirport Mulhouse .

As part of the standardization of all DB bus divisions in Baden-Württemberg under the DB Regio Bus Baden-Württemberg brand, the strategy is, among other things, to only submit offers with the subsidiary Friedrich Müller Omnibusunternehmen GmbH for new tenders for transport services, as this is based on a collective agreement of the private bus industry can calculate cheaper personnel cost structures.

Line network

Line to Küssaburg in the Waldshut district

The SBG route network extends from Basel in the extreme southwest to Sulz in the northern Black Forest , in the east from Rottweil via Villingen-Schwenningen to Waldshut-Tiengen . Mainly connected areas are the districts of Emmendingen , Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald , Lörrach , Waldshut , Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreis , Rottweil and cross-border lines to France and Switzerland .

In addition to regional transport, the SBG operates the city bus routes in Bad Säckingen , Breisach , Grenzach-Wyhlen , Laufenburg , Löffingen , Rheinfelden , Schiltach , Schramberg , Waldkirch and Waldshut-Tiengen.

The lines of the SBG are partners of the individual transport associations in the communities and districts.

The SBG owns around 250 buses and, together with partner companies, has a total of around 500 buses. Almost 39 million passengers are transported annually, with the buses covering 32 million kilometers on the 4940-kilometer route network.
