history
At the site of the Dachswanger mill, there used to be the Dachswangen castle , today's Dachswanger mill.
There is evidence that it was already settled in Roman times, and the place was first mentioned in a document in 1087. At that time the name was Untkilicha , Latin Ecclesia in Undis (Church in the waves) and probably alludes to the location of the church on an island between two streams. Until the transition of the Breisgau to the Grand Duchy of Baden , the bishops of Basel had the right of patronage over the Umkirch parish church . In the 14th century Umkirch was the aristocratic seat of the Lords of Giving .
On December 20, 2007, the Umkirch bypass on federal road 31 was opened to traffic by former district president Sven von Ungern-Sternberg after a long wait . The opening of the extension of the B 31-West to Gottenheim followed on September 7, 2012.
