The Welte Fahrzeugbau GmbH is a medium-sized German designer, manufacturer and distributor of forestry, municipal and special vehicles based in Umkirch in Freiburg im Breisgau , at the edge of the Black Forest .

history

The company was founded in 1952 by Alexander Welte senior († September 2, 2001) in Freiburg im Breisgau. At first, superstructures for trucks and tipping trailers for cars and trucks were manufactured, a little later also long timber vehicles and special low-loader trailers (semi-trailers), cable winches and hydraulic attachments and forwarding devices (1958 first forest equipment on converted Unimog ).

In 1961, the headquarters and production were relocated to Umkirch. In 1964, the first all-wheel-drive special forest machines with articulated frame steering (Welte "Forstmann" as the basic vehicle) were developed and produced. In the 1970s followed the development of a medium-heavy special forest tractor (Welte "Ökonom"), an engine tractor with a changeable rear frame and a small thinning tractor with a very short wheelbase (Welte "JubiTrac") with a shift in focus. In the 1980s the powershift transmission (1980) and a swivel-back device (1985) were developed. In 1990 the 400th special forest tractor and the 750th forest attachment were delivered.

On July 1, 1998, Werner Nühnen, who had previously been managing director and board member of companies in the mechanical engineering sector, took over the company and restructured it. New and further developments followed, in particular a modular system for the flexible combination of equipment elements.

In 2001 Welte received the sponsorship award from the state of Baden-Württemberg for young companies, and in 2002 the innovation award from the Interforst trade fair in Munich for the development of a constant-pull winch . In the same year Welte acquired the rights to license production from the FMA ( Frankenberger Maschinen- und Anlagenbau ) Forst- und Spezialfahrzeugbau GmbH in Frankenberg (Saxony). In 2006 the first 8-wheel combination machine was developed. The production facility was modernized and several halls were added.

Welte now delivers over fifty new machines every year. The products ( skidders , forest combi machines, forwarders , harvesters ) are now exported to around thirty percent of total sales through several sales partners, mainly to France, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and central Eastern Europe, but also up to to Japan.
