A low loader is a special transport vehicle, usually as a trailer for trucks and tractor units, which is primarily used to transport heavy or bulky loads. The name comes from the particularly low-lying loading area. This means that even with high loads, underpasses and tunnels can be driven through, as well as power lines, etc., and vehicles can be loaded onto a trailer more easily, since the access ramp can be kept shorter and / or flatter.

In the case of high transport speeds, it is relevant that the area exposed to wind is smaller for the airstream and the lever for crosswinds.

Executions

Typical use: transport of construction machinery , tractors and tanks , heavy haulage , amusement rides
  • car -Anhänger
Typical use: Transport of small construction machines (e.g. mini excavators ) in gardening and landscaping
  • Transfer low loader
In the case of a transfer low- loader , the wheels are attached below the loading area, making construction equipment in particular easier to transport, as the entire width can be used.
  • Intermediate low loader
In the case of an intermediate low loader, the loading area is attached between the wheels, which means that very tall objects can be transported.
  • Single axle low loader
Single-axle low loaders only have one axle and are therefore only able to move smaller objects, such as garden machines. The upper edges of the wheel arches can stand up above the loading area if the load has a corresponding ground clearance between its wheel axles.
  • Tandem low loader
Tandem low loaders have a double axle , which has the advantage that they are able to transport heavy objects and still retain the cornering ability like single-axle vehicles.
