Skidder

HSM skidder type 208F

As a skidder , rope tractor , special forest tractor or long timber tractor, a vehicle is referred to in timber harvesting that can transport harvested wood from the stock via the logging routes to the forest roads that can be used by trucks. Skidders are self-propelled machines that are considered to be the successors of the skidding horse . In contrast to the forwarders , the skidders do not have a transport frame or trailer on which the (mostly short) tree trunks are collected and then completely transported away. As a rule, the (mostly long) tree trunks are pulled over the forest floor with a skidder, as was the case with the back horse.

history

In the 1950s, agricultural tractors initially replaced the horses and oxen used to back the wood in the forests. These forestry pioneer machines were conventional agricultural tractors, which were supplemented by a winch. Since the demands in the forest sector are different from those in agriculture, special forest tractors first appeared and later the skidders with their (above all visible) wide tires. Although skidders with a cable winch are still in use, nowadays the skidders with a clamp bench and crane with a wooden grapple have established themselves .

advantages

Such a heavily loaded forwarder creates a very high level of soil compaction

The skidders are also heavy vehicles, but compared to the forwarders, less wood can be transported with a skidder , so that the soil compaction is lower when working with a skidder and therefore less damage to the forest. In addition, they are available comparatively cheaper. If the trees are felled at right angles across the alley, a skidder can only be used from the back alley. Driving through the stock is then only necessary in exceptional cases. With the help of long-armed cranes, skidding lanes can be created at a greater distance from each other in order to do less damage to the forest ecosystem .

The pictured skidder with crane, clamp bench, front bumper plate and stake wagon / stake basket is in turn a forwarder with the latter for transporting short timber. If the stanchion basket is removed, it can be used with a clamp bench as a skidder for backing long logs. The conversion from short logs (with stake cage) to long logs (with clamp bench) usually takes less than an hour if the attachment points are the same. With the clamping bank, several logs can be moved at the same time, which greatly increases the logging performance. When moving with the clamp-on-bench tractor, however, particular attention must be paid to the protection of the ground, as extremely high pressures can be achieved.
