The place is one of the oldest settlements in Breisgau. From the 1st century AD, the Romans lived here in manors and cultivated fruit and vegetables. The settlement of the Romans is proven by archaeologically secured remains of a Roman bathing building, which can be visited north of Merdingen in the direction of Wasenweiler . In addition, numerous sites from Roman times have been found in the Merdinger district. According to aerial photographs, a Roman road led past Wasenweiler west of the bathing building in a northeastern direction.
The village of Merdingen was founded by the Alemanni in the 5th or 6th century. Further documentary mentions date back to the years 1137 and 1154 as part of a donation to the monastery of St. Peter and in 1139 in a papal bull for the duchy of Basel . The local rule changed several times. It is known that from 1666 a third belonged to the Barons von Kageneck and from 1716 after the sale by the Barons von Wessenberg two thirds belonged to the Teutonic Order-Kommende Freiburg . In the 16th and 17th centuries the village was sacked several times because this village is located between Freiburg and Breisach and could not avoid the wars that were fought here.
The place was described in 1754 as "one of the largest villages in Breisgau". The historical buildings, half-timbered buildings and the market fountain (Stockbrunnen) still show the commercial and rural past. The stick fountain dates from 1739, but was later relocated a little up the slope, creating a space outside the center of the village; At this place there is a late Gothic country inn with bay towers and a courtyard entrance from the 18th century, the baroque Gasthaus zur Sonne from the 17th century, the old schoolhouse and another former inn. The Gasthaus zur Sonne is also the birthplace of the Baroque sculptor Johann Baptist Sellinger . Another interesting house that belongs to the town center is the half-timbered Saladin house from 1666.
