Eichstetten am Kaiserstuhl is a municipality in the south-west of Baden-Württemberg near Freiburg im Breisgau .
geography
Geographical location
Eichstetten is a southern Baden winegrowing village. It is located in the Upper Rhine lowlands , on the eastern edge of the Kaiserstuhl . It is located in the warmest region of Germany, embedded in a valley that stretches from the wooded Eichelspitze through sunny vineyards and vegetable fields down to the lowlands. The Alte Dreisam flows through the village at the foot of the Kaiserstuhl .
Eichstetten is about 3.5 kilometers as the crow flies from the federal motorway 5 (Karlsruhe - Basel). There is also a good S-Bahn connection to the Kaiserstuhlbahn , which runs to the place every half hour on weekdays. With it, the city center of Freiburg can be reached in about 15 minutes.
Community structure
The village of Eichstetten and the farms Au (stucken) mühle and Herrenmühle belong to the community.
history
There is evidence from the Stone Age that people lived in the Eichstetter district. Remains of a villa rustica from Roman times (3rd century) as well as finds from an Alemannic burial ground (around 600) give evidence that people have settled here for a very long time.
Eichstetten was first mentioned in a document in 737 in connection with the Murbach monastery . The place was founded by the Alemanni , as indicated by the ending "-stetten". In the 12th century, the Lords of Eichstetten ( Eichstetten Castle ) are proven in the place.
In 1416 Eichstetten became part of the margraviate of Baden , which in the 16th century meant that the place became Protestant in the course of the Reformation in 1556. As a result of the Thirty Years War , the population fell sharply, so that around 1659 only 110 people lived here. By 1850 the population had grown to 2,860 people, but decreased sharply in the following years due to emigration to America.
In the 18th century, immigration had created an important Jewish community. Here seemed Albert Weill , the father of the composer Kurt Weill , as Kantor . In 1828 a synagogue was built, which was burned down by members of the SA and SS during the Reichspogromnacht in 1938 and then demolished. The remaining Jews were deported to the Camp de Gurs internment camp in 1940 .
The addition of the Kaiserstuhl to the community name became effective on October 1, 1997.

coat of arms
The coat of arms is a split shield. In the front, the sovereign coat of arms of Baden is depicted with a red sloping bar on a golden background . The rear part shows a green upright oak branch with an acorn and four leaves on a silver background. This "talking" part of the coat of arms stands for the place name Eichstetten and has developed from the historical seals .
Promotion of commitment and sustainability
Eichstetten has been intensively promoting civic engagement and a local Agenda 21 process since the 1990s . This resulted in projects in a wide variety of policy fields; the most well-known nationwide is the “Schwanenhof” senior citizens' residence, which is heavily supported by volunteers. These activities brought Eichstetten first place in 2003 in the nationwide competition "Sustainable Commune" organized by Deutsche Umwelthilfe in the category of small communities.
Partner communities
There is an official parish partnership ( Jumelage ) with the French community of Saint-André in the east of the Pyrenees . Friendly relations exist with the German community of Amtzell on the western edge of the Allgäu in Baden-Württemberg . There is also a relationship with the Freiburg district of Mooswald as part of the urban-rural dialogue.
Culture and sights
Two large annual markets take place every two years and every two years the clubs invite you to the large, well-known "Schwiboge-Wifescht" in courtyards and cellars, where visitors are spoiled with regional specialties and Eichstetter wines. Also during the year the numerous clubs offer many interesting events.
Museums
- Village museum with changing exhibitions
Buildings
- Historic five-arch bridge
The historic five-arch bridge is located near the eastern exit of Eichstetten, which leads Landesstraße 116 over the Alte Dreisam at almost 33 meters. The structure was erected in 1784, but the apex of an arch bears the year 1745. The foundations of the bridge go back to the 16th century. The edges of the five-meter-spanning basket arches are made of sandstone, the parapets as well as the forehead and wing walls are largely made of gneiss. Due to the increased traffic load, the bridge was stabilized in 1950 with tie rods, concrete reinforcements and a sealed reinforced concrete layer.
Since July 2006 there has been a 42.5 meter high observation tower on the Eichelspitze, from which one has a unique all-round view of the Kaiserstuhl, Black Forest and Vosges . It can be reached via a geopath designed as a circular route. The Eichelspitze can also be easily reached from the Vogelsang Pass (277 m) between Bötzingen and Vogtsburg .
- Bruderhäusle and St. Erhard's Chapel
On the summit of the Eichelspitze, a late medieval hermit monastery consisting of a kitchen and bedroom with an adjoining St. Erhard's chapel was found. The building complex was part of the St. Peters monastery on the Neunlinden-Buck (555 m), which Hesso von Baden-Hachberg assigned to some Pauline friars in 1387 , a good two kilometers as the crow flies. From the building complex of around 16 by 9 meters, which was once surrounded by a ditch ( verified by georadar ), a remnant of a wall 4 m wide and 2.5 m high can still be seen today. The structural structure of the Bruderhäusles has been reproduced as a ground monument by a layer of above-ground granite blocks since the site was opened.

Economy and Infrastructure
Agriculture
Eichstetten is characterized by its strong agricultural focus: with around 100 hectares, it is also one of the large organic farming communities in Baden-Württemberg . In this area, wine, vegetables and fruit are grown using various organic farming methods . Under the motto “Enjoy at the producer”, the products can be bought directly on the farms in farm shops .
In December 2015, in the year of the 60th anniversary of local organic cultivation and the corresponding commitment of local organic farms and wineries, Eichstetten received a special prize in the nationwide BodenWertSchätze competition of the Council for Sustainable Development (RNE) for the " International Year of Soils " and the German Federal Environment Foundation (DBU).
In the community, twelve wine-growing companies grow wine on almost 400 hectares, including the Friedrich Kiefer winery .
economy
A major employer in Eichstetten since 1963 was Gould Electronics GmbH , a leading global manufacturer of high-quality copper foils. The company was closed at the end of 2014. As a result, the municipality of Eichstetten lost 160 jobs. The company Gould Electronics was last (since 2004) part of the Japanese JX Holdings . The organic food wholesaler Rinklin Naturkost GmbH is the largest employer in town with over 200 employees.
energy
At the northeast exit of Eichstetten there is a 380 kV / 220 kV substation operated by EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg , from which there is also a line connection to France. The electricity concession contract was renewed on October 1, 2009 for a period of 20 years with EnBW.
