The synagogue in Eichstetten , a municipality in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district ( Baden-Württemberg ), was built in 1828. It was set on fire on November 10, 1938 and completely destroyed as a result.

history

The religious services of the Jewish community of Eichstetten have been held in a prayer room consisting of two adjoining rooms in a private house since the 1760s. When the number of Jewish community members increased, the Jewish community decided to build a synagogue. On March 3, 1828, a purchase agreement was signed for a suitable piece of land in the center of the village, which was only a few hundred meters away from the Protestant church and in the immediate vicinity of the Jewish cemetery established in 1809 . The synagogue was built according to plans by the architect Christoph Arnold . The synagogue was a longitudinally rectangular solid building, which stood out from the adjacent residential buildings due to the facade design. The portal consisted of Doric columns and half-columns, it was spanned with a wide thermal bath window . The central nave was covered with a flat longitudinal barrel and the galleries were flat. The galleries ran on three sides of the synagogue.

During the November pogrom of 1938 , the synagogue was set on fire by foreign SA and SS men, and it burned down completely. One day later, the local residents destroyed the Jewish bathhouse and burned the hearse. The fire brigade was not allowed to intervene in the synagogue fire, only to protect the neighboring houses. Their bill of 900 Reichsmarks had to be paid by the Jews who were still living in Eichstetten.
