Christoph Arnold (architect)
Christoph Johann Jakob Arnold (born June 1, 1779 in Karlsruhe ; † July 17, 1844 in Heidelberg ) was a student of Friedrich Weinbrenner and himself became an important architect of classicism in the Grand Duchy of Baden .
Life
Christoph Arnold was born in Karlsruhe and attended high school there. He later took scholarships to Rome, Naples, Pompeii, Paestum, Vienna and Munich. He completed his early career as an architect working for the builder Friedrich Weinbrenner (1766–1826), who, as his mother's cousin, was related to Christoph and his brother Friedrich Arnold, who was seven years younger . The brothers were both encouraged and influenced by Weinbrenner. Christoph Arnold worked at Weinbrenner in the expansion of Karlsruhe until 1818. Part of the development on Ludwigsplatz, the Badischer Hof inn and the slaughterhouse went back to him in Karlsruhe. In addition, several other buildings were built according to his plans in North Baden, including his first church in Hasselbach in 1810. He married Wilhelmine Eichrodt in Karlsruhe in 1808.
Between 1819 and 1835 Arnold worked as a superstructure inspector in southern Baden. In Freiburg im Breisgau numerous private buildings were built based on his designs, he also built university buildings and worked on the Freiburg Minster . According to his plans, the Leopoldvorstadt in the north and the Stephanienvorstadt between Dreisam and Martinstor were laid out from 1819 .
In other southern Baden towns he built a total of eight churches and two synagogues, as well as various school and office buildings. Finally, in Freiburg in 1832, he also published the architecture textbook Practical Guide to Civil Architecture , which is still entirely committed to Weinbrenner's classicism, while his successor as head of Baden's building management and thus as Arnold's superior, Heinrich Hübsch , had already devoted himself to the so-called round arch style .
In 1836 Arnold was demoted to district building inspector and transferred to Heidelberg , possibly as a result of the dispute with Huebsch . In this position he erected around 30 more buildings in Kraichgau by 1844 , including in particular council and school buildings.
