The holy Erhard (* before 700 probably in Narbonne , southern France; † to 715/717 in Regensburg ) worked as itinerant bishop in Alsace and in the Bavarian town of Regensburg.

Life

Erhard probably comes from Narbonne in the south of France. Towards the end of the 7th century he was traveling as a wandering monk in Alsace and founded numerous monasteries here. A legend has been passed down from that period according to which he gave sight to the Alsatian duke's daughter Odilia , who was blind from birth, when she was baptized. Around 680/690 Erhard came to the court of the Bavarian Dukes of Agilolfinger in Regensburg as a mission bishop . Here he worked as a pioneer of the Christian faith in Bavaria even before the actual establishment of the diocese of Regensburg by Duke Theodos II . The hl. Boniface canonized the already existing Bavarian bishoprics in 739.

The exact date of death is unknown. He probably died in Regensburg around the year 715 or 717. His original grave and other archaeological finds can be visited in the crypt of the Regensburg Niedermünsterkirche . His relics are now in a silver shrine from the 19th century on the north side of the church.

On October 8, 1052 he was by Pope Leo IX. canonized.
