Theodo II
Theodo II (* before 665 ; † October 15 around 717 ) was Duke of the Bavarians in Bavaria from around 680 to 717 .
Sometimes he is also called Theodo V to the legendary dukes Theodon I to III. - all before the year 570 - to be included. With Theodo II, on the other hand, the time of the dukes of Bavaria begins, whose rule is almost always well documented.
Life
Duke Theodo II comes from the house of the Agilolfingers , as prescribed by Bavarian tribal law, the Lex Baiuvariorum . His parents are unknown. He is considered a grandson of Garibald II. Theodo ruled Bavaria and the entire settlement area of the Bavarians around the year 700 like an independent prince. He was married to Folchaid . Duke Theodo II intervened in the Lombard throne dispute. He allied himself again with the Lombards and granted asylum to King Claimant around the year 702 . Like an independent prince, Theodo II was able to divide his duchy among his sons without the consent of the Merovingian Franconian kings.
Theodo undertook a trip with a Bavarian embassy over the Alps to Rome in 715, where he worked with Pope Gregory II to establish a diocese organization and the establishment of a Bavarian church province. In the same year (715) he also married his daughter Guntrud to Liutprand, the son of Ansprand. Throughout his life he could not come to terms with the strengthening of the Franconian housekeepers ( Pippin the Middle ). So he planned together with Pope Gregory II the establishment of an independent Bavarian church province. The division into the four dioceses of Regensburg, Freising, Passau and Salzburg was probably already carried out at that time. Under Boniface and Duke Odilo , the four dioceses were canonized in 739.
His son Theudebert was co-regent from around the beginning of the 8th century . Theodo divided the tribal duchy of Baiern between his sons Theudebert, Theudebald , Tassilo and Grimoald .
The complete succession of Bavarian rulers begins with Duke Theodo II.
