history
During the settlement of the Hexental in the 7th and 8th centuries, the first Alemannic farmers came to the area of today's municipality and named their farms Biezighöfen . In 806 the village was first mentioned as Piazinchova .
As early as 786, a deed of donation from the St. Gallen Monastery reported for the first time about a court complex called Witunauia and the associated church. The noble court owners held public offices and represented the monastery of St. Gallen, whose political and religious influence in Wittnau was growing continuously at that time. The name Witunauia is made up of the two Old High German words witun (forest / wood) and auia (floodplain).
In the 13th century the Wittnauer Herrenhof became an Austrian fiefdom under the Bollschweiler noble family Snewlin-Bernlapp until it became the property of the Grand Duchy of Baden in the 19th century . A new church was built in 1795 under the Barons of Bollschweil. It should be the last baroque church in the Breisgau. 42 years later, in 1837, the male line of the Snewlin-Bernlapp died out. The homestead at Wittnau was awarded by the Grand Duke of Baden to the Barons von Berstett , who also took over the Bollschweiler Castle. However, the Grand Duchy erased all feudal rights over the years in its endeavor to establish a central administration.
Since 1811 the communities Wittnau and Biezighofen have been viewed as a unit and officially referred to as the community Wittnau. In the 1960s, Wittnau began to develop from a farming community to a residential community. In 1971, as part of the administrative reform, the municipality joined the Hexental administrative community , as it wanted to maintain its independence. The development towards a residential community with a suburban character continued. Wittnau was also recognized as a resort . In the meantime, Wittnau has grown strongly due to the move from nearby Freiburg.

The highest vineyards were all cleared after 2000. In 2010, the area under vines was only around a third of what it was in the middle of the 20th century.
