Life

Franz Peter Nick was the son of an official; he had other siblings, a younger brother of whom later became a medic.

He attended high school in Freiburg im Breisgau and began studying philosophy at the local high school (today: Berthold-Gymnasium Freiburg ). During his studies he also began to study theology. The course was interrupted by a request to take over the teaching of Count von Bissingen in Konstanz for two years; then he received a free table in the imperial college in Pavia , where the future Catholic clergy of the hereditary states were trained. In this college, each theological subject was taught by several teachers from different schools and orders.

Due to the warlike development with France , he went to Vienna in 1796 and introduced himself to Emperor Franz II , who provided him with financial means for further studies at the University of Vienna from a study fund; He found accommodation with Privy Councilor Ferdinand Fechtig (1756–1837).

He was ordained a priest on September 24, 1797 and in the same year he was employed as a cooperator and catechist at the St. Martin parish in Freiburg im Breisgau . He later became a religion teacher at the local school and became the district school dean.

Count Maria Wilhelm Joseph Xaver Alois von Sickingen-Hohenburg (1777–1855) appointed him pastor in Ebnet in 1806 , but two years later Baron Franz Xavier Bernlapp von Bollschweil appointed him to the Wittnau parish .

He was friends with various scholars from the University of Freiburg im Breisgau , such as the poet Johann Georg Jacobi , in whose journal Iris he also published a few essays, he was friends with Karl von Rotteck and was one of the defenders of Ignaz Heinrich von Wessenberg .

He also took the opportunity to attend lectures, so he heard all of Franz Joseph Gall's lectures when he was in Freiburg for some time and presented his theories on skull theory .

When Ferdinand Geminian Wanker , who was professor of moral teaching in the theological faculty of the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, died in 1824, Franz Peter Nick was elected as his successor and confirmed by the Kaiser on May 1, 1824 as a full public professor. After six months, the theological faculty gave him the head of the faculty and he was proposed to the highest position as rector .
