geography

location

Located between the Hohfirst as the southern part of the Schönberg massif and the Black Forest in the southern Hexental, Bollschweil belongs to both the Vorbergzone and the Black Forest, as the main fault between the Upper Rhine Graben and the Black Forest runs through the municipality . The district of St. Ulrich lies entirely in the Black Forest.

Neighboring communities

Bollschweil borders the city of Freiburg and the municipalities of Münstertal , Ehrenkirchen , Pfaffenweiler , Eringen , Sölden , Wittnau and Horben .

Community structure

The municipality of St. Ulrich , which was independent until 1974, belongs to the municipality of Bollschweil . The villages of Oberdorf and Unterdorf, the hamlets of Aubach, Ellighofen, Gütighofen (the western part belongs to Ehrenkirchen ), the Zinken Leimbach, Hof and Haus Gütle and the homestead Bitterst belong to the municipality of Bollschweil within the borders of December 31, 1973 . The village of Ortisei, the hamlet of Geiersnest and the Kaltwasser homestead belong to the former municipality of Ortisei. In the district of Bollschweil are the ruins of Birchiburg and the Innighofen that opened in the lower village.

history

Until the 19th century

Bollschweil was first mentioned in 838 as Puabilinisvilare in a document from the St. Gallen monastery . Its history is closely linked to the noble Snewlin-Bernlapp family, a branch of the Snewlin family , which is important throughout Breisgau . When the family died out in 1837, the castle and the place came to the barons of Holzing-Berstett , whose descendants still live in the castle today.

After 1087 Ulrich von Zell († 1093), the prior of the Sankt Ulrich priory in the Black Forest , founded a nunnery in Bollschweil, which was moved to Sölden in 1115.

Incorporations

Ortisei was incorporated as part of the municipal reform on January 1st, 1974. As early as 1854 the community of Geiersnest was incorporated into Ortisei.

Mining

For a short time (1938–1939), iron ore was mined in the Bollschweiler district near Kuckucksbad am Schönberg. This not particularly extensive mining, however, was stopped after those two years (1938: 28,144 t, 1939: 40,252 t) after a total production of 69,396 t. This early setting was mainly due to transport problems, as the ore had to be transported to Bad Krozingen by lorry . This transport later became significantly more expensive because fuel was scarce when the war broke out. Mining relics from this epoch are difficult to find due to a land consolidation in 2000.

In contrast, there was evidence of extensive mining in the surrounding mountains during the Middle Ages, which was primarily carried out on silver. In the Birkenberg area in particular, research into this mining has started. The tunnels and shafts of medieval mining have remained almost unchanged over the centuries and were not influenced by modern mining as in many other mining areas in the Black Forest.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

Bollschweil is connected to the regional local transport network via the 7208 Freiburg - Bad Krozingen line of the Südbadenbus company.

Established businesses

In Bollschweil, lime mining has been carried out on the Hohfirst since 1920. The company founded by the Bollschweiler entrepreneur Franz Koch is now owned by Knauf Marmorit GmbH. Limestone mining was stopped on March 31, 2011, mainly due to a drop in demand. The production of dry mortars for exterior and interior plasters continued. Of the almost 100 employees in 2009, 35 were still at the site in 2015. In the course of the recultivation of the quarry areas, more than 100,000 cubic meters of earth had been filled in and planted with trees by 2015. In addition, the width of the street was halved.

The local inn, which has existed since 2010, is operated as a cooperative.

education

There is the Marie-Luise-Kaschnitz primary school in the village, where around 80 children are taught in four classes by nine teachers. In the St. Joseph Kindergarten of the Catholic parish St. Hilarius, up to 74 children from the age of one year to school entry are looked after and supported. These facilities are summarized in the “Education Center for Three to Ten Year Olds” (model project of the state of Baden-Württemberg).

Further educational institutions in the adult sector are the St. Ulrich Monastery Educational Center (Landvolkhochschule), the Bollschweil Catholic Educational Institute, the St. Ulrich Catholic Educational Institute and the Southern Breisgau Adult Education Center.
