Franz Joseph Spiegler
Franz Joseph Spiegler (born April 5, 1691 in Wangen im Allgäu , † April 15, 1757 in Konstanz ) was a German baroque painter . He was best known for his frescoes , which decorate some churches and monasteries on the Oberschwäbische Barockstraße . The ceiling paintings in the Minster of Our Lady of the Zwiefalten Abbey are considered to be his main work .
Life
Spiegler was born as the son of a district court procurator in the Free Imperial City of Wangen im Allgäu. After his father's early death in 1692, his mother, who came from an old patrician family in Wangen, married the (craft) painter Adam Joseph Dollmann. So Spiegler became familiar with the painting trade early on. Around 1710 Spiegler received training as a painter in Munich from his great-uncle, the Bavarian court painter Johann Kaspar Sing , where he also got to know the history painting of the time, which was influenced by Dutch painting. It is questionable whether he worked as a barrel painter and gilder at Wolfegg Castle and the surrounding area from 1712 to 1723 . From 1723–1725, Spiegler made frescoes in the Ottobeuren monastery under the strong influence of Jacopo Amigoni, who shaped Munich court art . In the following years he created frescoes and oil paintings for numerous monasteries, churches and castles, especially in Upper Swabia, on Lake Constance, in the Black Forest and on the Upper Rhine. Spiegler died in Constance in 1757.
