Gerhard Birkhofer (born May 6, 1947 in Ravensburg ) is a German artist. He works as a freelance sculptor , painter and designer . He has written numerous specialist books in the field of art education and was an art lecturer at the Freiburg University of Education .

Life

From 1971 to 1974 Gerhard Birkhofer studied art and German at the University of Education in Freiburg and from 1982 to 1990 art history at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg with Erik Forssman and Jürg Meyer zur Capellen. From 1986 to 1994 Birkhofer was 1st Chairman of the State Association of Visual Artists Baden-Wuerttemberg (BBK) and worked in this role in the Image Commission on Concept 88 for the ZKM Karlsruhe . In 1990, Birkhofer co-founded the artist group “constructive art on the upper Rhine”.

Since 1982 he has taught in the art department at the Institute of the Arts in the fields of specialist science, specialist didactics and specialist practice with a focus on sculpture and graphics . He has written numerous books on the practice of printmaking as well as textbooks for art classes.

He has had solo exhibitions and participations in exhibitions since he began his artistic career in 1976. Numerous works can be found in museums, public and private collections and in public spaces. The first book publications on the subject didactics of art appeared in 1978 by Ravensburger Buchverlag. Birkhofer has been editor of the periodical art lessons (ALS-Verlag, Dietzenbach) since 1979. His publications on elementary education have been published since 1999.

Gerhard Birkhofer lives and works in Gottenheim am Tuniberg, where his daughter Angela runs a gallery.

Gerhard Birkhofer is concerned with geometric-constructive art. He uses stainless steel and iron for sculptures. In 2002 the Gottenheim water sculpture was designed and made by the artist Gerhard Birkhofer. As a painter and sculptor of geometric works, he has had numerous exhibitions in the USA and European galleries.
