Rethera is a genus within the butterfly family of swarmers (Sphingidae).

features

The compound eyes are moderately long. The labial palps are blunt and rounded below and on the sides. The antennae are thickened club-shaped at the end and are curved hook-shaped just before the tip. The last link of the antennae is short and not long and fine, in the males only traces of hairiness can be seen. The epiphysis on the rails ( tibia ) of the front legs extend beyond the tips of the tibia. The middle and rear tibiae are spurred unevenly, the long spur is less than half as long as the first tarsal phalanx . The first tarsal phalanx of the hind legs is longer than the tibiae of the middle pair of legs and about the same length as the tibiae of the hind legs. Pulvilli and paronychia are absent.

All pre-imaginal stages are only known from Rethera komarovi . The eggs are large, egg-shaped and have a glossy blue-green color. They have a white line that surrounds the egg and turns brown after a few days. The caterpillars have a small head capsule. Your body is tapered towards the front, whereby the head and the first two segments of the thorax can be drawn into the third thorax segment and the first abdomen segment. In the last stage of the caterpillar, the anal horn is not developed. The spiracles on the first to the eighth abdomen segment are provided with eye spots. Blurred, sloping lines run along the sides of each abdomen segment. The doll is dark brown and has a strong sheen. The proboscis is fused with the body and forms a curvature similar to the genus Hippotion towards the front, but is not flattened laterally. The large Kremaster ends in a pair of spikes.

Way of life

The caterpillars feed mainly on herbaceous plants of the red family (Rubiaceae).
