Hippotion is a genus within the butterfly family of the swarmers (Sphingidae).
features
The fore wings are very elongated and tapering to a point, as is the abdomen, which is long and tapering. The antennae of the females are club-shaped and thickened at the end, those of the males are rod-shaped. The last link is short. The labial palps are softly scaled on the outside , but they lack the upright hairs that occur in the genus Deilephila . The scales at the top of the first segment are arranged regularly on the inside and thus form a straight dividing line. There is no tuft of hair at the tip of the second segment. The tibia of the hind legs have two pairs of spurs, the inner ones are longer than the outer ones.
The genitals differ only slightly from those of the genera Deilephila and Theretra .
The eggs are small, spherical, and shiny green.
The caterpillars have a back tapered body and can duck their head. The first and second abdominal segments are thickened and have eye spots . The anal horn is slightly curved backwards.
In the case of the doll , the proboscis is connected to the body. It is keeled and laterally flattened and thus looks similar to the species of the genus Theretra . The cremaster is long and pointed. It has no spines on the sharp, shiny tip.
Way of life
The caterpillars feed mainly on herbaceous plants and tendrils from the families of the grapevine family (Vitaceae), arum family (Araceae), wonder flower family (Nyctaginaceae), red red family (Rubiaceae), knotweed family (Polygonaceae) and evening primrose family (.
