The monastery Grunwald was a little Paulinerkloster in Grünwald the municipality Lenzkirch in the Black Forest .

founding

The Pauline monastery in Grünwald emerged from a hermit settlement around 1362 through donations from the nearby St. Blasien monastery and donations from the knights of Blumegg and von Wolfurt .

In the Pauline monastery there was a small convent in which, according to an obligation towards the monastery of St. Blasien, no more than ten monks were allowed to live; usually there were only two or three in addition to the prior . Around 1430 the small town of Kappel became a parish of the monastery. In 1488, the Fürstenberg rulers became masters of the monastery, as it fell into their domain. In 1803 the monastery was finally abolished.

Library

The library had a large collection of books, especially on pastoral care practice . Here was a manuscript that was important for the history of the Pauline Order, the earliest manuscript of the order constitutions.

investment

The small monastery complex and the church were rebuilt around 1670 after being destroyed during the Thirty Years' War . After receiving a relic of St. Lucius in 1675 , it was at times a popular pilgrimage destination . A copy of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa was also venerated here. In 1733 the small church was rebuilt. The church and monastery burned down due to arson in 1880; only the church was rebuilt on the old foundation walls by the princes of Fürstenberg.

In the entrance area there is a Gothic sandstone relief from around 1370, which shows the Christmas story and scenes from the Passion of Christ. The altarpiece, which shows the church patroness Maria Magdalena , dates from 1711 and was given to the monastery by the abbot of the monastery of St. Blasien at the time. There were close connections to the Pauline monastery in Tannheim and the Pauline monastery in Bonndorf in Bonndorf .
