Espen Barth Eide (born May 1, 1964 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian political scientist and politician of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap). From November 2011 to September 2012 he was the defense minister , then the foreign minister of his country until October 2013 .

Life

In 1993 he graduated from Oslo University with a degree in political science . He also studied at the Autonomous University of Barcelona . In 1992 he served as Secretary General of the Pro-European European Birds . From 1994 he worked as a researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Foreign Policy ( Norsk Utenrikspolitisk Institutt ). From 2000 to 2001 he was State Secretary in the Jens Stoltenberg I government in the Foreign Ministry under Minister Torbjørn Jagland . He then returned to the institute, where he was Head of International Politics from 2002 to 2005.

On October 17, 2005, he was appointed State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense and thus served in the Jens Stoltenberg II government . On June 28, he moved to the Foreign Ministry as State Secretary. During a government reshuffle on November 11, 2011, he took over the post of Defense Minister from Grete Faremo , who became the new Minister of Justice. On September 21, 2012, there was another cabinet reshuffle and Eide finally took over the office of Foreign Minister. He held the post until the resignation of the government on October 16, 2013.

He then became director of the World Economic Forum in Geneva , which he remained until 2017. Between 2014 and 2017 he also served as the UN Secretary-General's special envoy in the Cyprus conflict . In the 2017 general election , he entered the Norwegian parliament in Storting for the first time . There he represents the constituency of Oslo and is the first deputy chairman of the energy and environment committee.
