The Tingvoll ship was launched on the grounds of the “Best Western Tingvold Park Hotel” at “Gamle Kongeveg” (old royal route) in Steinkjer in Norway .

description

The ship setting ( Norwegian Skipssetning ) consists of 38 stones. It is the remainder of a burial ground along the old Königsweg. It consisted of building stones , several stone circles and 20 round, triangular and elongated burial mounds. Originally the stone setting was over 40 m long (today about 35 m), in the middle nine meters wide, and consisted of 45 (today 38) stones, both ends are missing. The highest stone is in the middle of the stone rows. The stones vary from about 50 cm to about 1.5 m in height. The facility used to be closer to the sea, which was four to five meters higher in the Viking Age before the land elevation .

Nearby

In 1869 two burial mounds were excavated below the ship's settlement. Both were ship chamber graves, a combination of ship and a log burial chamber made of wood. The dead lay with their heads facing north. A double-edged sword, a spearhead, a cast iron saucepan and some glass figures were found as grave goods. The graves are dated to the early 9th century. Ship settlements of this size are usually older and do not date from this period.
