The rock carvings at Bøla are Neolithic petroglyphs about 30 kilometers north of Steinkjer ( Norway ) .

description

Their height above sea level indicates that their maximum age is around 6000 years. The weathering and the style of the pictures lead to the conclusion that the carvings date from the Neolithic Age and are therefore among the oldest rock art in Northern Norway. Water, ice and frost damage as well as human activities (such as wood transport) have ensured that the rock carvings are heavily eroded, some are disfigured beyond recognition. Based on the design, the archaeologists differentiate between carvings made by the arable farmers and those made by hunters and gatherers such as those of Bøla. What is characteristic of the images on the Bøla River is that most of them are life-size and are very close to nature. Around 30 drawings of birds and other animals have been found.

The 180 cm long and 136 cm high reindeer from Bøla ( Norwegian Bølareinen ) became famous . The Bølaren animal, it is probably a reindeer cow, is one of the most famous and controversial rock carvings in Norway, as its authenticity is not certain.

Illustration of a skier

The furrows of a skier (norwegian Bølamannen ) are badly weathered, so that the figure is difficult to see. The picture of the man with skis and stick in hand is about 148 cm tall. Skiers who have been carved into the rock can only be found in Alta in northern Norway (see Alta Museum ). The images on the Rødøy peninsula in Alstadhaug municipality are controversial. Similar rock carvings by skiers can only be found in Zalavrunga on the White Sea in northwestern Russia.
