Åfjord is a municipality in the Norwegian Fylke (Province) Trøndelag (until 2017 Sør-Trøndelag ). It is located around 80 km north-west of Trondheim on the north-west side of the Fosen peninsula . The main town and administrative seat is Årnes , other settlements are Monstad and Stoksund on Stokksund . In Årnes, two of Norway's richest salmon rivers flow into the Åfjord, the Nordalselva and the Stordalselva. As part of the local government reform in Norway , Åfjord and Roan were merged on January 1, 2020.
The economy of the municipality is characterized by fishing , agriculture and forestry .
