At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2001 Varis achieved her greatest success, the bronze medal in the 15 km individual race; she also won with the Finnish relay team, but the gold medals were withdrawn because Virpi Kuitunen was found to have doped.

Doping scandal

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Val di Fiemme , Varis was found to have abnormal blood values. While she was blocked for the first individual race , she took part in the relay race, which the Finnish team was able to finish in second. It was later revealed that Varis had abused EPO ; it was banned for two years and the Finnish relay team was deprived of its silver medal, and the Finnish ski association lost 300,000 euros due to withdrawn sponsorship funds due to the doping scandal.

Varis was able to qualify for the Finnish World Cup squad again after the suspension expired, in January 2006 she achieved a World Cup victory with the relay in Lago di Tesero , and was nominated by the Finnish Ski Association for the team for the 2006 Winter Olympics, which the Finnish NOK refused However, because of their two doping offenses to include them in the Olympic team, so Varis switched to biathlon in the summer of 2006.

biathlon

Varis achieved first biathlon successes in February 2007 at the European Cup in Nové Město ; after a third place in the sprint race she was able to win the final pursuit - but with only 14 starters. The Finnish woman contested her first World Cup race at the end of the 2006/07 season in the sprint race in Lahti, where she was the worst shooter of the entire field with six shooting errors and finished 70th at the end of the race.

Varis competed regularly in the biathlon world cup since winter 2007/08 . In the second race of the season - the women's sprint on November 30, 2007 in Kontiolahti - she reached the points for the first time with fifth place. Due to very inconsistent shooting, she was rarely able to place in the points in the following competitions. On January 11, 2008 at the sprint in Ruhpolding , however, she managed a World Cup victory, in the subsequent pursuit she finished eleventh.

At the end of January, a blood sample from Varis' taken on January 6, 2008 at the World Cup in Oberhof tested positive for EPO abuse in A and B samples. On February 11, 2008, her World Cup victory in January was therefore canceled and the Russian Swetlana Slepzowa credited, the athlete was banned from the IBU for life. On March 1, 2008, however, Varis appealed against the ban for life and announced that he would want to go to the International Court of Justice (CAS) . On March 13, 2009 the Sports Court granted the appeal due to a procedural error. The reason was that Varis had not been given the opportunity to be present at the opening of the B sample.
