Pomáz ( German Paumasch ) is a town in Pest County in Hungary . It is located on the Helyiérdekű Vasút (HÉV) S-Bahn line between Budapest and Szentendre .

history

This area in the plain on the right bank of the Danube north of Budapest has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Scythians , Celts , Romans , Lombards and Avars have left their mark here. The name is probably derived from the Latin word 'pomosus' (orchard). The first written mention dates from the year 1138 in a document of the Hungarian king Béla II. , Called Béla the blind, (1110–1141). The deed is in the possession of an abbey.

Attractions

The Teleki-Wattay Castle, now also known as Choral Castle known

Pomáz is known for its Serbian Orthodox Church. As in nearby Szentendre, there has been a Serbian community here since the time of the Ottoman rule. In addition to a Roman Catholic, there is a Reformed church in the city.

Another significant building in Pomáz is the Teleki-Wattay Castle, built in 1773 in Baroque style as the seat of the Teleki family. It was extensively renovated in the second half of the 19th century. After the Second World War it was first used as an orphanage , then as a general childcare facility. After 2000 it was renovated again with funds from the European Union . Today it houses a three-star hotel and is a place for cultural events such as music projects, also known as the Choral Castle .
