Gyula Glykais (born April 9, 1893 in Pomáz ; † June 12, 1948 in Szekszárd ) was a Hungarian sword fencer .

Life

Gyula Glykais began fencing at Budapest University in 1912 and was part of the national team from 1923. He won his first international medal at the World Championships in Vichy in 1927 , when he was third in the saber competition behind his compatriots Sándor Gombos and Ödön Tersztyánszky . At the following World Cup in Naples in 1929 , he became world champion . In both 1930 in Liège and 1931 in Vienna , he had two more team titles won. Glykais took part in the Olympic Games twice: in 1928 he reached the final round unbeaten with the team in Amsterdam , in which they again remained undefeated and took first place. Together with János Garay , Sándor Gombos, Attila Petschauer , József Rády and Ödön Tersztyánszky, Glykais became Olympic champion . At the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles he remained unbeaten with the Hungarian team again throughout the tournament and received another gold medal together with Aladár Gerevich , Endre Kabos , Ernő Nagy , Attila Petschauer and György Piller . At the national level, Glykais was the Hungarian team champion in 1927.

After his fencing career, Glykais worked as the chief district auditor and later became the director of the auditing office in Szekszárd .
