Rudolf Kárpáti

Rudolf Kárpáti (born July 17, 1920 in Budapest , † February 1, 1999 there ) was a Hungarian saber fencer , six-time Olympic champion and seven-time world champion.

Kárpáti originally wanted a career as a violinist and graduated from the Budapest Conservatory . But since he fought alongside, his arm became too hard for the violin. However, he completed his studies as a musicologist.

Kárpáti took in 1948 for the first time in the Olympic Games and won with the team of the Hungarian saber his first Olympic gold medal. He repeated this success with the team in 1952 , 1956 and 1960 .

In the individual competition he won gold in 1956 and 1960. With six Olympic gold medals, Kárpáti is one of the most successful athletes in Olympic history. In 1954 and 1959 he was also individual world champion, with the team he won seven world championship titles.

After his career he stayed true to his sport as a referee. He held various positions in the international fencing federation (FIE). He was involved in the introduction of the electronic hit display in saber fencing.

In 2014 an asteroid was named after him: (231278) Kárpáti .
