Michele Maffei was world champion in the individual competition in Vienna in 1971 . In 1978 in Hamburg and 1981 in Clermont-Ferrand he also won bronze. With the team he was runner-up in Grenoble in 1974 and in Rome in 1982 and also secured four more bronze medals between 1971 and 1983. He took part in the Olympic Games four times : in 1968 he reached the final in Mexico City with the Italian team against the Soviet Union , which prevailed 9: 7. Maffei thus received the silver medal together with Wladimiro Calarese , Pierluigi Chicca , Rolando Rigoli and Cesare Salvadori . With the foil team, he finished seventh. Four years later there was a renewed battle for the gold medal against the Soviet Union, in which this time Italy got the upper hand with 9: 5. In addition to Maffei, Mario Aldo Montano , Mario Tullio Montano , Rolando Rigoli and Cesare Salvadori were Olympic champions . He also made it to the final round in singles, in which he just missed another medal win in fourth. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal he finished sixth in the individual, while he reached the final undefeated with the team. In this again the Soviet Union prevailed 9: 4, so that Maffei received another silver medal together with Angelo Arcidiacono , Mario Aldo Montano, Mario Tullio Montano and Tommaso Montano . In 1980 he moved into the final with the team in Moscow for the fourth time in a row, in which, as in the three previous Olympics, the Soviet team was the opponent. The Italian team around Maffei, Ferdinando Meglio , Mario Aldo Montano, Marco Romano and Giovanni Scalzo lost the battle 2: 9 , so Maffei won his third Olympic silver medal. He finished the individual competition again in sixth place.
