He won his first medal in 2010 in his hometown Seoul , where he immediately became Asian champion in individual and finished second with the team. In the following year he also won gold and silver in the same place, only this time the other way around: in the individual he was runner-up, while he celebrated the title wins with the team. In 2012 he repeated his success from 2010 in Wakayama and became Asian champion in singles, but with the team he missed the title. In both 2013 in Shanghai and 2014 in Suwon , he won gold in both individual and team competitions. In 2015 he finished second in the singles in Singapore and the year after that in Wuxi for the first time he not only missed the final at an Asian championship, but remained without a medal in the singles. He won the team competitions. At the 2017 championships in Hong Kong , Gu achieved double success for the third time with gold in singles and with the team. He successfully defended his individual title in Bangkok in 2018 , whereas he won his first bronze at the Asian Championships with the team.

At the Asian Games , Gu was the dominant saber fencer in all of his appearances. He erfocht both in 2010 in Guangzhou and 2,014 in Incheon and 2018 in Jakarta each gold medal. He also achieved this success with the team at the 2014 and 2018 games. In 2010, the team lost to China in the final and thus won the silver medal.

At the international level, Gu had been successful at the Universiade in 2011 , he won silver in the individual and bronze with the team. In the same year he achieved his first success at world championships . In 2011 he won bronze in the individual in Catania and in 2013 in Budapest .
