2016 Summer Olympics opening ceremony
The opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics took place on the evening of August 5, 2016 at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro .
procedure
The opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games incorporate a number of traditional elements set out in the Olympic Charter . The opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games also began with the raising of the flag and the playing of the national anthem of the host country Brazil . This was followed by the cultural program with hundreds of samba dancers , performances by model Gisele Bündchen and musicians such as Caetano Veloso , Ludmila Ferber and Gilberto Gil as well as an emotional artistic appeal against environmental destruction, climate change and the deforestation of the rainforest .
Then the traditional march of the participating athletes from 206 nations and ten athletes with refugee status into the stadium began. As always since 1928, the Greek team marched first into the stadium to commemorate the ancient tradition of the Olympic Games. Then all other participating nations follow in alphabetical order of the main language of the host country. This was despite the fact that the broadcaster NBC , which had paid 7.75 billion US dollars for the broadcast rights, wanted the United States team to come towards the end. The US viewers should hold out in front of the TV until the end and thus bring better ratings. The penultimate delegation entered the stadium from the Olympic refugee team . The team from the host country Brazil formed the conclusion of the invasion. Each athlete planted the seedling of a tree in a glass installation when moving in.
Subsequently, the former athlete Kipchoge Keino from Kenya was honored for his services to education, development, culture and sport with the newly created Olympic Laurel Award (“Olympic Laurel”).
Organizing Committee Chairman Carlos Arthur Nuzman gave a short introductory speech . This was followed by the President of the IOC, Thomas Bach , who u. a. "In the spirit of Olympic solidarity and with the greatest respect ... the refugee team welcomed". At the end of his speech, Bach traditionally gave the floor to the head of state of the host country. The controversial interim president Michel Temer formally opened the games to whistles from the audience.

The Olympic anthem followed while the Olympic flag was carried into the stadium. Then the flag bearers of all participating countries gathered around the podium. On this, Robert Scheidt (for the athletes), Martinho Nobre (for the referees) and Adriana Santos (for the coaches) took the Olympic oath , with which they promise compliance with the rules.
The penultimate runner of the relay race brought the Olympic torch into the stadium and handed it over to the last runner, Vanderlei de Lima . He then lit the fire with the torch. The celebration ended with fireworks and a carnival procession into town.
